Beginners Gym Routine

I've joined the gym but they can't fit me in with a personal trainer for a while. What do you suggest I start off with? I've been doing lots of cardio, I find it easiest but the weight machines, I really don't know where to start. Also, I am pretty enthusiastic atm and feel like I could go to the gym every evening and pedal non-stop but I know my enthusiasm would quickly disappear, so how much and what should I do?

I have a pilates class tomorrow to start me off.

Pilates is great idea. Simple bodyweight exercises, done with good form, are a really good prerequisite to weight training. You work on your major muscle groups and plus the stabilizer muscles.

If you're a beginner the classes offered can actually be very good for you. I have a friend that does nothing but classes since she joined, and she is kicking *kitten*!

Otherwise, check out bodybuilding.com. They have an area with workouts that are organized by goals and experience. It may take some digging to find one that truly suits you, but it should give you a good starting point.
