Hiya,

I have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and don't really know what I should and shouldn't be eating.I know that I have to cut down on sugary foods and drinks but not really sure on what to eat.
Anyone else have this condition that could help out with diet tips, recipes etc?

Greetings. When many people find out they are diabetic (or pre), they rush out and buy sugar free and sodium free food. That is not the answer. It's about balance and portions. You want to get in the habit of reading the nutrition value of everything you eat. If you are going out to eat, check out their website before you go and look at the nutrition value chart. There are healthy options everywhere you go. After you have calculated your daily calorie needs, you want to make sure you break it down to 5/6 small meals per day. Add exercise (resistance and cardio) in to your weekly routine and you can live a normal life. I am a nutritionist/personal trainer and spend most of my time with obesity and diabetic clients.

You want to stay away from simple carbs (whites). You want to eat more complex carbs like whole grains, fiber, oats, wheats, etc. Eat grilled over fried foods. It is a lifestyle change. The hard part is transitioning in to the healthy lifestyle. The downfall of alot of people is they try to switch overnight. When they happens, a relapse is imminent. I recommend transitioning, but give yourself a cheat day. Or a cheat meal. That way you can look forward to that planned day of the week. But don't over do it. Still eat proper portions when you cheat.

Feel free to inbox me if you would like me to go in to greater detail.

Lean meats, fresh fruits & veggies, raw nuts...everything that is healthy!! You can google alot of great recipes!! I don't have it...but I eat as if I do, keeping my blood sugar from spiking is how I lost my weight!!

Stay clear of pre packaged and processed foods!! to high in calories & fat, sugar and sodium!! you can get full & lose weight eating fresh & clean!!

Hi, there is a Type 2 Diabetes Support Group on MFP, it might be a good place to start. There are also diabetes classes that you can attend, trying searching through the diabetes.org website and I also got this website off the support group on MFP, www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14045524.php

I have been a type 2 diabetic for six years now. It is easy to get hooked on to the low sugar, low carb thing.

You can basically eat anything you would like to, but eat in moderation and smaller portions. Healthier options is a good way to go, like eating whole grain wheat, fresh fruits and veggies. Prepare your own food and try to avoid processed foods as much as possible. Fried and Processed foods tend to have lots of hidden sugars. Try not to rely on Carb counting alone, or you will go nuts. It is a helpful tool, but can be very upsetting sometimes. Allow yourself small cheat a day until you get used to your new diet and then cut the cheat down to once a week.

Can't add much more than what @Nutrition1st has said, but after 10 years, I was finally able to come off the medications with a weight loss program here on MFP, based on diet and exercise alone. I hope you can do the same.
I did find that I tended to shun refined carbohydrates, including sugars. But it was really as part of an overall caloric "budget" I was aiming for. You may direct message me if you like as well, but I think you are in good hands here with the weight loss program.
It's scary I know, but you can overcome this.

Simplist and easiest way to prevent further slide into Type 2 diabetes is to limit sugar and carbs. Many people will continue to tell you that you can eat whatever you want, in moderation, but research and science show time and time again that cutting out refined (or white, as someone already said) carbs and sugars you'll be much better off.

White carbs are easy to identify: Bread, Rice, Pasta, Sugar. Concentrate on vegtables, meat, fat and low sugar fruits such as berries. With a lower carbohydrate diet you can in fact reverse and recover completely from Type 2 diabetes without the need of medications at all.

Be wary of grains as well, as many people (most) experience blood sugar spikes when eating grains, especially wheat and corn.
