I have noticed people drinking/eating protein shakes or meal supplement bars while in the gym so I purchased some myself. However, I am a little concerned because of the amount of sugar. Are they really good for you?

I go for whey isolate.
I prefer ON Gold Standard. low sugar (1g), low fat (1g) and low carbs (4g). There are many other kinds that offer the same type of profile but I have stuck with ON for years.0 -
Pure Protein bars are very low in sugar and still taste pretty good. Balance Bars, however, are terribly high. Not worth it for me.0
