I have a friend that needs to lose 100+ pounds. She really wants to lose the weight but really doesn't know how to go about getting started. I myself have lost a lot of weight (40 pounds) but that's all I needed to lose, and 100+ pounds I'm sure has a very different approach. So, what I'm trying to ask if for you people that have lost that much weight, how did you do it? How did you get started? I'm aware on the diet subject. I just really need to know about exercising, and the gradual changes you made.

I took it a week at a time. I focused on small goals. I started at 137kg (300lb) so my first goal was under 130kg. Then under 125kg. Don't look at the end number. I've only just changed my ticker for my real goal weight. Being because I've lost 36kg and my goal weight is only 31kg away. So now I know it's reachable.

It's not really any different than losing 40 pounds. You might advise her to start off simply logging her food. Just being aware of what she's eating will probably lead her to start making better choices. Once she's familiar with the process then she can start eating healthier and reduce her calories.

I'll end up losing at least 100 pounds. I'm down 80 with probably another 30 to 40 to go. I jumped in with both feet and I've had good results. If that's too much of a shock for her, then small changes over time, and smaller reachable goals are probably better, as Lozze says.

For exercise, I'd say try to get her to start walking. That's really the best exercise to begin with, and likely all she'll be willing and able to do. Once she's lost some weight and is feeling stronger she might be willing to do some weight lifting and more strenuous cardio.

However, even if she doesn't exercise just following MFP's food recommendations will cause her to lose weight. I dropped from 275 to somewhere in the 230s before I did a single bit of exercise.
