I am new to mfp and new to getting back in shape. I've been on a crash diet b4 and drop my wieght down to 136lbs back in 2004. I decided I didn't like being skinny and wanted to be more muscular but ended up going on a 7 year drinking binge. I ended up being 205 lbs. with a BF% of probably 30% or more. I decided that it was time I started getting back into shape so I signed up to a gym back in Sept 2011. Because of my work schedule, chronic medical conditions and just plain old laziness I only made it to the gym about 2 weeks per month for the first 5 or 6 months. I spent most of that time doing cardio. I saved the strength training for the weekends because I did not want to do heavy weight lifting after a longs day work. I actually weighed myself today(6/26/12) and I'm currently at 175 lbs. Originally, I was mainly concern with growing my traps and started out with a heavy weight(400lbs) that I could crank out 10 reps and would do 3 sets and thought that was enough to cause hypertrophy. Week after week I was anticipating lifting more weight because in theory I would be stronger but I couldn't lift anymore than I could last week and after several days when the pump dissipated, my traps were flat again. That temporary physique I was seeing was nothing more than blood causing a swelling in my muscle. I thought I wasn't eating enough potassium. Then I recalled an article I read regarding fast twitch and slow twitch fibers and learnd that the traps consisted of slow twitch fibers that plays a supporting role and that it would be more stimulated with a lite weight/higher reps. I started to use a lite weight(150lbs) and higher reps(60) and now my traps don't go flat when my soreness goes away. Anyone familiar with fast twitch and slow twitch fibers?
