There is quite a lot of evidence supporting the idea that limiting calories alone is not enough to produce and maintain weight loss, but what type of foods you eat is also important. In other words, WHAT is just as important as HOW MUCH.

This study suggests that a 40% carbs, 20% protein, 40% fat combo is a good distribution (although other studies indicate that it is important that those carbs involve natural high fiber sources like whole grains and vegetables, and fat is best from plant sources more than animal).
