Boy do I need help. Most of my exercise consists of jump rope. It burns an incredible amount of calories and is very high impact, which I need to keep the calcium from leeching out of my bones. Here's the problem: I did something awful to my ankle. But I can't afford to stop the jump rope. I don't like anything as much and there's not much else I can think of to do in the house when the kids are napping. I do have 2 hand weights, I think they're 12 lbs each. I don't know how to use them, but until the swelling goes down on my ankle, I think I'm stuck with them. Any suggestions on what to do with them?

  • If your ankle isn't too bad maybe you can do squats with the weights pushing them upward slowly as you rise....???? Sorry to hear about your ankle. I hope that it improves soon.

wanderlust7...I'm so sorry!:flowerforyou: I totally know what it feels like to not be able to workout the way you like to...totally frustrating! But there are some things you can do instead. Focus on your arms. Just think...I'm going to have FABULOUS shoulders!!! Do some arm extentions, tricep kick-backs, bicep curls...whatever you can. Do some google searching and you'll find tons of different arm exercises you can do. I know it's hard and not so fun to stray from a routine you love, but doing something you can is better than doing nothing. So, try and have some fun with it and your ankle will be better in no time!!!! Good luck!!

Oh OUCH! Hope you get better! In the mean time, if you've got $10 or so dollars, a stability ball might be a good investment. I purchased mine several weeks ago and, not only are they fun, they are great (and quiet) for core exercises.

P.S. They have expensive ones and cheap ones and the size you need is depending on your height. I bought mine at Wally World. (Wal-Mart)

Oh, I feel for you. I sprained my ankle really bad at the beginning of last summer and it took at least 5 months for it to heal and not swell. It still turns really easy and I have to be so careful when I wear heels!

Treat it really nice, if you don't let it rest it's going to take a really long time to get better.

Like other people suggested I would focus on your upper body and your abs. You can do all kinds of exercises with hand weights and if you do them strong and steady you can really get your heart rate up.

Reverse flys are one of my favorite for getting a good back workout in and getting your heart rate up.

    Good luck!
  • thank you! thank you! i'm googling as we speak. the stability ball sounds like a good idea, i'll just have to find one that's inexpensive. for the long run, i was thinking an eliptical, but i don't have a bottomless pit of cash, so maybe a used one is a good idea. wish me luck.
  • Try Target for a cheap stability ball. I got mine from there and it's pretty nice.
  • Aerobics with a guy named Gilad on Discovery health is what I've become hooked on. He works with weights and resistance bands, too.Good luck-Chris.
  • ahh! found stability balls, they are cheap! i was thinking they were those half-round-gel-thingies you can stand on. those suckers are about a hundie. can you tell i don't use a gym?

I purchased a used elliptical machine in my area for $100. I found several for the same price. I found a new one, still in the box, that the lady did not want to put together and use, it was $300. Most people get them, assemble them, use them for a month, then let them sit for a year or more before selling them. I love mine, except that I wrote a couple of weeks ago saying that it squeaked horribly after my husband spent an hour taking it apart and oiling it very well. Two days later, the squeaking stopped, but I think it won't last because the three of us use it faithfully, daily, for many hours a week. Just a tip if you decide to get a used one, buy ear plugs at the same time.

and could you tell me more about your rope jumping routine because I'm going on a road trip and could pack that and use it when I'm stopped in rest areas, etc. Do you just jump for an amount of time, or have some little routine you go through. Tell me more about this if you will.

I understand the frustration very well as I'm trying to heal muscles in my back. I can't do my cardio for awhile. Yes you could work out your upper body. Don't do to much to quickly or you will be sore. A stability ball is alot of fun and I have used mine but not as much as I should. Usually it ends up being an extra seat in my living room:laugh:  they take up a little space. I hope your ankle heals really soon.
