Looking for some EASY (and healthy of course  ) skewer ideas/recipes whether it be for the grill or creative ideas with fruit or anything else. I'm not very creative but Labor Day is coming up for some of us and my kids would love to skew some things on there, like shrimp for the grill. I did find some ideas on allrecipes.com but you all are always so helpful, thought I would check here too

I would have a variety & let everyone build there own skewers. Green & red peppers, onions, chicken, beef, pineapple, zuchinni etc. Then you could have a few sauces to choose from to baste them with. italian dressing, bbq, teriaki. For fruit try strawberries, cataloupe, watermelon, pineapple, bananas etc.

Good luck & have fun grilling.

FYI -- my folks have never had a problem BUT I hear you are supposed to soak the skewers in water before loading on the meat/veggies.... otherwise they might catch fire while grilling.

My faves are shrimp and cherry tomatoes and mushrooms and pieces of onions and squash. My parents love adding in chicken and green bell peppers and steak.

Anything you want, you can stick on skewers!

Be sure if using multiple kinds of meat, to only put one meat on each kabob.
Once made one with multiple meats, and the shrimp and steak were overcooked due to the chicken needing more time.

In some of the recipes I googled I saw where it says to soak the sticks and I never knew why but now I know, thanks!
  • I highly recommend using metal skewers. Hubby and I do a lot of 'kabobs' and long ago I switched to metal ones. Those bamboo things splinter up when you pull meat off of it.

Our favorite is pork kabobs. Lean pieces of pork loin cut in cubes, green and red bell peppers, onion, thick cut bacon and chunks of fresh pineapple (the canned stuff is too small and mushy). The bacon strips are cut into 1/3's and usually we put it through one end, then the pineapple on and then the other end of the bacon, so it wraps around the pineapple. All the fruit and veggies in larger pieces as well. When ours are almost done we baste them with sweet and sour sauce. When we lived in the city on a corner lot, we had multiple people stop their car in the street and ask what we were cooking! A few of them looked as though they needed a bib
