i love food.

I've been going to a trainer for about a month and a half now. After three weeks of SUPER intense boot camp style workouts three days a week, I met with him and some other members to discuss nutrition. He has this whole system designed to eat six small meals a day which is supposed to give you boundless energy, blah blah blah. It's basically one protein and one carb (veggie carbs, of course) for each tiny meal. Then you can have a fat (avocado, peanut butter, cheese, etc.) near the end of the day. It all made sense to me and he gave a list of 99 foods to choose from. I was following along for the most part and then he said...

"I have never found pleasure in what I eat. I know it's for energy. That's how you have to see it"

I almost fell out of my chair. I LOVE food. My happy place is a patio at a Mexican food restaurant with my friends. I know this whole process is about realizing the things that are bad for you and making these changes. But I had a hard time listening to him talk to me about food when he'd never been there. To not kow what it feels like to want to eat something so bad that it's an addiction.

Any thoughts on how you have accepted your relationship with food?

I love food too. There's no need to change the fact that you enjoy your food, it's just about self control and portion size and keeping within your daily numbers. I actually enjoy my food even more so now that I'm eating healthier and logging it all.

I love food. I love it because it tastes good AND because it's fuel for my body. I don't see why you can't enjoy your fuel.

I love food, too.......but I see where he's coming from. I had to learn, in the beginning, to live by the mantra "Eat to live, don't live to eat."
At that time, I had 100 pounds to lose. Now that I've lost 90, I've allowed myself to get BACK to enjoying my food, but I still remind myself daily that it IS fuel. That is it's purpose. It is not food's job to make me happy, it's MY job to do that. :)

I know all about the Mexican patio with my friends, believe me!! I love food too. Every holiday, every occasion is surrounded by food. When you start your journey, its overwhelming, then as time goes on and you stay on a straight path- it gets easier. Not EASY, just easier.
During the last few months of this for ME, I have noticed how much FLAVOR is actually in good, nutritious food. Use spices- garlic, onion, and cilantro- its my favorite. And I also feel so much better, not bloated and feeling like I cant move or don't want to..

"His program" is basically any bodybuilding type diet. I followed a program awhile back that has the same basic principals but let you have one free day a week. I don't take the one day a week but save it for birthday parties, special occasions, holidays, etc. Anyways, its called "Body for Life" or the cook-book, "eating for life". You might consider "free days" to indulge occasionally.

Food is about so much more than fuel.
