New with shoe ? (kinda long)

I walk on a treadmill (usually 3.5 mph @ 2.0 incline) and I am having difficulty with shoes. I put my foot in one of those silver (old type thingy) foot measurers and it says I wear a 8 1/2 / 9 but when I put that size on they are way too small. I have tried 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 but can't seem to get it right. When I try them on in the store I always have a thumbs length of room and they seem comfortable when I just walk around in them but when I get on the treadmill my toes hit the end of the shoe. If I go to a bigger size then they feel loose in the ankle and rub up and down. Should I look at a smaller shoe with no extra room, a wider shoe with a larger toe box, a different brand (tried nike, new balance, asics), a different type?

Thanks,
K

Go to a good athletic shoe store and have them fit you properly. The service is all included in the price of the shoes

New Balance stores have someone on site to fit you properly

Go get properly fitted, a running store is a great place to go for that. Then, for walking and running you should buy your shoes a minimum of a 1/2 size bigger to allow for the forward motion of your foot in the shoe and keep your toes from hitting the end of the toe box. I wear a size 10 or 10.5 in most brands and I always buy an 11 and have not had the toe problem since..
