Roller Skates VS Roller Blades

I took my 9 and 6 year old girls roller skating for a park and rec activity. I used to ice skate when I was a kid. But, when I was 13, I fell and broke my tailbone and never skated after that. I have no idea why, but I never roller skated. It kind of sucked sitting on the sidelines while other people were out skating with my girls. My 23 year old is in roller derby and she came along so they had someone to skate with. She kept pushing me to get some skates, but I was too chicken. There was a whole rink of crazy kids ages 5-13. I would have gotten pushed down in a heartbeat. That really got me thinking about learning to skate so I can go with my girls. We went looking for skates, but no store around here sells them. We went to rummage sales and Goodwill and all they had were blades. When I got home I decided to try on my 18 year old's blades to see if I could even stand in them. I surprised myself. I thought I'd be wobbly, but not at all. I tried to skate around my kitchen, but the best I could do was hold on to some chairs and glide. lol It's pretty crazy that I want to learn to skate at 43 years old. Especially when I've been dealing with fibromyalgia and arthritis for the past 15 years. But, if I can do Turbo Fire, I guess I can try to learn to skate.

So, now I'm wondering...skates or blades? Is there a reason why one is better over another? Is it just a personal preference kind of thing?

Another thing, my dh insists that roller skating doesn't burn many calories. I don't believe that for a minute. It seems like you would burn a ton because you're using your glutes and hamstrings to the max. Tell me my dh is wrong. :)

Roller skating or roller blading is a great exercise. I worked at a skating rink years ago and knew of several people who lost a lot of weight that way. I personally like roller skates they are more stable in my opinion. Look up skating calories its pretty good I am not sure right off the bat.

I love roller derby and roller skating. I got my daughter a pair of skates at Academy Sports. They carry adult skates too. I personally have only been on blades once and fell and knocked myself out. But I can skate good!

Blades much much bettter, in my personal opinion. I feel I have better balance and my ankles don't get so weak, compared to skates. And you can use the blades outside too, don't usually see people outside skating with rollerskates..

    I think it's a personal preference.
I roller blade and LOVE it!
It DOES burn an enormous amount of calories in a short period of time. The best part is that it's fun and you spend more time doing it!

I used to love it as a kid. Go for it but be careful!

I always preferred blades as I got go way faster on them and could push outwards easier.i don't know if this makes sense but you don't have to keep your foot as flat to the ground as you do with skates as the track is not as wide making it easier to push off in a v shape.

    Sorry for a stupid question:

You guys talk about roller skates and roller blades. What is the difference? I am from Germany and we use the word Inline Skates. I go every day about 1 hour inline skating, which for me is the best cardio exercise at all times. I guess, the so called blades are the inline skates????:embarassed:
