I used mapmyride on my phone to track my cycle route and time and I'm averaging about 15 mph for my route which is half off-road (gravel track, bit of grass, some hills) and half road (stopping at occasional red light and slowing down at junctions) 12 mile route in about 45 minutes

I feel as if this is a pretty good sort of speed; my legs burn and I get a good sweat on. But I have no benchmark. What sort of speed do other cyclists average for this type of terrain? I ride a Hybrid bike, not a racer

As an aside - I started off averaging 13 mph. The wind rushed through my hair and I felt like I was going fast! Then I watched the London marathon and realised that the pace they were running meant they were at record breaking pace which is just over 2 hrs for the 26 miles. They RUN at 13 mph for 26.2 miles!!!!

I've never used the feature, but the Strava Cycling app has a feature where you can see where others have used the same or similar route, and you can compare and race against their times. That feature is called Segments and if you're lucky enough to be in an area with a lot of other users, it's pretty awesome.

Awesome yes..... unless you don't compare very favourably! If I'm worst I could always tell them that I used my nieces' Barbie tricycle
