Desert weeds from hell

I just spent a couple of hours weeding of my yard... or at least, one tiny section of my yard.

Holy ****, desert weeds SUCK. They grow seemingly overnight, their roots apparently stretch to hell, and they're covered in stickers/thorns/poison. I'm covered in a rash fingers to elbow, and on top of attacking my hands through the gloves some of the effing huge thorns snuck into my shoes. and now my feet are bloody.

Oh. and they're impervious to weed killer. I gave in and bought some (I'm not a big fan of fixing my yard with chemicals) and they just... wilted slightly. My yard is xeriscaped, and it's driving me crazy. People in New Mexico with pretty yards, I bow down to your superior skills...and suspect that you have full time hardeners on staff.

Anyone know how to handle these things more efficiently?

Err, well, maybe -some- of you have full time hardeners... but I meant gardeners...

I have the same problem. I can weed every hour of everyday and still be fighting the *&&^%&%!

I completely soak the weeds in water and wait an hour. It makes the dirt soft enough for me to pull them out. Sometimes I get the occasional freak weed that has the root of a carrot that is impossible to pull. I leave those alone because the last time I tried to pull one I pulled so hard I almost crapped my pants.

Yeah, weeding sucks. I consider it my workout especially on days when I do it for hours.

As for keeping them away, I have no solution. I think its impossible.
