How do I know what pace?

I'm doing the C25K program, doing the Color Run 5K next weekend, and I'm hoping to do a 10K later in the year (GULP!)... my problem is, I don't know what pace I should be running during the run part. I've heard I should be able to carry on a conversation and not be all out of breath... I run alone and find myself singing lyrics to figure out if I'm going to fast... but I'm not sure how to determine if I'm going to slow/easy. Any thoughts? And any reference books you suggest for FAQ of a newbie? I'm on week 3 day 2 (I know, a little behind in the training game) and I usually play the program 1 1/2 times (minus the cool down at the end of the first and the warm up at the start of the 2nd go round) because I can go a bit farther (plus I"m never the whole way home yet!). My last run/walk was 3.1 miles and I did it in 35 minutes (but that includes warm up and cool downs).and I wasn't exhausted or worn down when I got home... So I'm not sure what pace to run... All thoughts/suggestions are welcome... .

If you can finish each run interval throughout the whole workout and not feel like you're dying at the end then that's probably about right.0

I think I'm most worried I'm not going fast ENOUGH.... now that I realize I"m not supposed to be all out of breath when I run (what a revelation!)0

If you don't feel challenged at all you can speed it up some but not so fast that you become breathless. At this point, you don't need to go that fast to get the targeted fitness effect. You want to be running aerobically. If you are running anaerobically you will be out of breath and your legs will not want to continue.0
