Suggestions for Travel & exercise

I've been married for 30 years. Spouse has slowly gone from being active to being sedate. He uses an old back injury and the fact that he needs new knees be his excuse for not doing active vacations. His idea of a "vacation" is for me to attend one of his conferences with him. But I shouldn't go out for walks "because it is dangerous" and that excursion I planned on signing up for is expensive, all in his attempts to get me active with this organization. The average age of the people in this organization is 80 - my husband wants to be the new blood to keep it active.

Since I am NOT interested in sitting in ENDLESS meetings and eating rubber chicken dinners, I need suggestions on where to look for more active vacations - where I can travel alone. (Spouse will not go - sisters are not interested)
I've never camped, or done much water activities. I am a casual bicyclist. I am interested in history.
Ideas and suggestions would be welcomed.
