........ trying to become a Thin Old Man.
Hello,
Back in February, I ended up in Hospital suddenly with Gall Bladder problems. Still waiting for the operation to remove that (really not looking forward to that).
However, my Doctor seemed to think I was a little overweight for some reason. I was only 17 stone 11 pounds after all. (249 pounds).
So I started on the low fat diet he recommended.
Today I am 15 stone 10 pounds (220 pounds).
Despite my joking above, I am quite pleased with that - especially as it brings me just out of the 'Obese' and into 'Overweight' according to the BMI scale.
My GP suggests aiming for at least a BMI of 28, although I am hoping to reach 25 eventually - perhaps by Christmas.
I still look rather tubby but it is hard to imagine (or remember) what I used to be like.
For diet, I cut out chocolate and sweets altogether (very hard to do), plus Fried Foods (even harder) and try to serve myself smaller portions instead of filling the plate or dish. I eat mostly Quorn rather than actual meat, plus lots more fruit than before. I also walk the dog for miles every day, weather permitting.
The biggest difficulty is finding something low calorie to go with the meat - both potatoes and rice seem to include a lot of calories (plus of course lots of carbohydrates) - especially when compared with the Quorn.
One thing that shocked me was looking up the number of calories in a Burger King Whopper and fries. I used to eat lots of those.
One odd thing I found was that when I compared a chocolate covered shortcake biscuit (Cadbury's Snack) with a large plain Rice Cake (Sainsbury's Be-Good). The biscuits are quoted as 75 calories for 2 biscuits, whilst the Rice Cakes are 35 calories each. So 2 chocolate covered biscuits are only 5 calories more than 2 boring and taste-free Rice Cakes!! Of course, the hard part would be only eating 2 of the 6 biscuits in a pack.

Hi there - I like your post, very funny and helps us to get to know you. You have done very well so far but you will find it a lot easier with a group of friends to support you. I'm a bit concerned that you still haven't taken the ethos of MFP to heart though. You need to eat proper food and measure/count the portions. If you like meat, you don't have to cut it out, just have a small portion. Quorn is fine if that is what you want but do not deprive yourself of foods you like, that is a sure way of getting fed up and stopping the diet! Learn to plan your daily menu and include small portions of the foods you like and build in your treats.
Interact with your pals and see what they are getting upto on both good days and bad days, what exercise they are doing - trying to do sometimes. It becomes so natural.
Mydiary is open to the public so you are more than welcome to look at it and see that I have everything I want - just in smaller quantities.
Good luck - feel free to add me as a friend :flowerforyou:

Welcome to MFP and congrats on the 29 lbs lost to date! I joined MFP 6 or 7 weeks ago and have to say that tracking my meals has been very eye opening.....us old guys can still learn a thing or two!! I am very happy with my results to date and am eating better, have certainly increased the exercise and the water.
Best of luck on your journey and feel free to add me.0
