I am 58. I usually do too much too fast and end up with an injury.

Lifting weights and biking I ended up with a sore kneecap. Took almost a year to not be a problem.

Lifting weights and the squat. I ended up with bursitis of one hip. Still a problem.

Now I bike about 1 hour every other day and lift weights the other days for upper body.

I have had to back off and that is contrary to my nature.

I have had to come to terms with that and so ask the question for those older, what do you do?

Hi there! Sorry but I had to chuckle reading your post. I am 42 and have learned in the last 3 years that I have quite the competitive streak in me. I tend to try and keep up with my fiance when we are working out....I am 5'6 and he is 6'6!! And I always end up hurting something. And I live on Glucosimine and ice packs/heat for that very reason.
We have done P90X and are currently doing Insanity. And because of what I mentioned above, I am currently nursing horrible right knee pain. Not sure what I have done but I am having to modify everything I do. To the point that I am using our gym in the garage for more upper body stuff the last couple days.
So not sure if I even know how to answer your question. But slowing down seems to be the obvious answer :) As I have to keep telling myself "this isn't a race! And since I want to keep working out, I need to be smart and slow it down. Quality over quantity!!"
Good luck to you! Be careful :)
