road trip snacks

Hubby and I are going on a 10 hour road trip with $0 for fast food. What are some healthy snacks we can bring or make?

Get some of those 100 calorie packs, apples and a jar of peanut butter, stuff that you don't have to keep cold. That is all I can think of at this hour :)

Air popped popcorn with Pam butter spray and salt is super low in calories. You can have about 4 cups for only 120 calories. Enjoy and drive safely.

Jerky is a good one if you like, can be rather filling (high protein) and you just gnaw away at it for a while.

Just make sure you get the good stuff. It can be high on sodium though depending on brand/style

Fruits and vegetables are good. Crackers with cheese, if you're bringing a cooler. Jerky. Water.
  • we dont have a cooler but we have a case of water and can stop at gas stations to get a cup of ice which most of the time is free if you bring your own cup.

apples and those little cups of pb sound amazing.
  • correction* we have a cooler but no room in the car for it.

I'm having the same problem, 10 hr drive on Thursday. I'm bringing cold cuts to make sandwiches and some granola bars and protein bars.

We have a long drive starting next Monday. I pack a cooler of sandwiches (mostly applegate farms meats and a couple of peanut butter), hardboiled eggs, apples, carrots, fage yogurt, pistachios and almonds. We always get out and eat in a picnic area along the interstate (USA). Our pets (a pitbull and African Grey) are traveling for us and they like all those foods too.

Safe drive. Take a break and stop to eat and stretch your legs!

I mostly do nuts and raisins on road trips.

My husband makes a killer jerky - he found the recipe on a backpacker website. It tastes just like real steak, only dried. Because the meat quality is so good it doesn't require loads of sodium to make. It has ruined me, though. I could never eat processed store-bought jerky again!

Take a thermos with boiling water and a travel coffee cup and make instant cup soup or green tea?

We do about a 10 hour drive when we go to my in-laws. I have a cooler which we put in the middle seat so I can reach it from the passenger seat. Generally in there I have cheese ( I buy a block and cut up into slices before we leave since its cheaper), crackers, peanut butter, baggy or cereal, water, soda, crab meat (louis kemp makes 120cal individual packets which are a tasty healthy snack), little bags of chips, and sometimes leftover dinner from the night before since I dont feel like cooking right before and we get pizza or chinese which can be eaten in the car cold if we wanted more of a meal
  • I went through our pantry and found we have graham crackers, peanut butter, quacker rice snack bags, and various cereals such as cheerios and rice chex.

What could be something more of a meal (supper) that doesnt have to stay cold?
  • RIce cakes, smear some peanut butter on them. Yum.
  • You don't have to have a cooler....just use an insulated lunch bag. If you freeze a couple of drinks (pour a little water out of your water bottles and freeze them) and put them in the bottom of the bag, as they slowly thaw they will keep your food cold and eventually you can drink the water, too. Or use a small frozen ice pack. Only put items that need to stay cold in the lunch bag (cheese, yogurt, trail mix if it contains any chocolate chips, sandwiches), not items like nuts, pretzels, apples, etc. We do this all the time for long road trips, and it works great.
