Ankle Injury and Recovery

I sprained my ankle really bad a few weeks ago. I am still not walking down stairs normally and I am *mostly* walking normally. I have been doing only 5 minutes on either recumbent bike or the elliptical to try to warm up before doing upper body strength training- nothing weight bearing on my ankle. My goal is to work back up walking again, then do the couch to 5k plan to get back into running. However, other than just plain walking, does anyone have any tips that might be helpful to do that? Is it better to do elliptical or work on my form walking on the treadmill? I have exercises that I am using from my doctor and I'm not new to healing from sprains, but this is the worst I've ever done and usually I don't go back to exercising aftewards (thus my weight problem LOL).

any advice would be greatly appreciated- thanks!
Also any exercise other than machines that would be good that won't put stress on my ankle would be great too!
