I noticed some folks like pancakes or waffles in a thread sometime earlier and wanted to post this in case anyone isn't aware. I guess snopes says it's for real so here it is:

    Ewww! And scary too!

My mom, dad and grandmother are notorious for keeping food past expiration and it has always driven me crazy.

I sure didn't know anything about it. I am going to watch especially when I shop Grocery Outlet where you get a lot for less but the expiration dates are why! Geesh! Well, I guess on some of the products they get them cheaper because of other reasons. Just good info to watch out for;)

If you read the Snopes article, it says that the age of the mix has nothing to do with it. It's only dangerous if the package has no inner lining (like wax paper, plastic, or foil), and that is only dangerous if you're allergic to mold.

    ...but reading is hard...

Yep... food can make you sick and even kill you!

Baby spinach, organic cantaloupes, green onions, peanut butter, pre-made cookie dough and raw milk from the farmer's market have killed some people and made many others sick just in the past few years.

I don't think pancake mix is especially dangerous, but it's always a good idea to check expiration dates and know where your food comes from.

Did you read the article? It specifically says that there's not much to worry about here:
There is truth in this tale, yet its inherent warning is overblown. In a nutshell, staledated pancake and other baking mixes pose no danger to you unless:

    You are allergic to mold

The baking mix was not contained in an unbleached wax paper, plastic, or a foil pouch within its outer packaging

How old the mix is has no bearing on its safety — a mix that is well within its freshness date yet has come to contain mold spores could prove fatal to someone with a mold allergy, while one that is a year or two beyond its "Best use by" date but did not contain mold spores would be perfectly safe.

To those saying that there isn't much to worry about:

If a person opens a package of, I don't know...Bisquick, and then uses it over the course of 12 months, there is a good chance that mold could grow even WITH the plastic liner.

Why? The bag was opened, so it's no different than having no bag at all.

I happen to have a mold allergy and I have family members who keep food too long, therefore this is good to know info for people like me.

If you have an allergy then so long as you know it and take care you will be fine, Don’t eat out of date foods to which you are allergic to. The rest of the world, ignore it as more manufacturing hype to sell you new foods when your old foods are ok.

Eggs flour, salt water, who need to buy it pre-mixed anyway?

I often eat out of date food. If it looks ok and smells ok it is ok. This method has worked forever, or we wouldn't be here. Mind you, our ancestors never had bisquick I suppose...

I make everything from scratch. I just don't understand why people don't.

Whether or not the mix has mold, it's still bad for you. You are much better off to make it from scratch and save all the preservatives and other cut down on the sugar. Pancake mix from scratch is really very simple and easy, and tastes so much better!
