    The shapesense calculators are handy.

I start off with an estimate of 311 calories in 20 mins at 150 bpm.

Then I use my (measured) VO2max and it comes down to 262

Then I correct from gross to net and get to 236 calories. So the original estimate was 32% high.

I found them to be useful myself. My HRM calculates a 400 calorie burn at about 190. I've run my numbers with every algorythm under the sun and none of them come in at that low. I found these ones to be a good "middle ground" if you catch my drift.

Your diet is the key factor. Without the proper deficit (not too high and not too low due to over estimating calories burned and eating them back) all the exercise in the world is not going to make you lose weight.

    See-

This website is one of the best I have found for what we are doing here.

    Interesting read. Thanks for posting.

My calorie goal is set at 1400 calories a day, but I exercise about 1300 calories a day. I usually eat between 1500-1900 calories day...which still leaves me in the hole. Practically everyone says, eat more.

    BUT

I have had people tell me oh you're not really burning that many calories, MFP overestimates the calorie burn per workout. Get a HRM and you'll see.

    THEN

I get an HRM, and it shows I am actually burning more than MFP says I am. but LOL, I then had someone tell me my HRM was wrong! ha ha

FWIW I am still very heavy' currently at 203.2 pounds. So i burn a lot more calories than say, someone who is 10 pounds (my goal weight).

A goal weight of 10 pounds seems a bit light. :glasses:

LOL. Sorry meant to write 130 pounds!!! ha

Your gym machines OVER-estimate? I just joined the gym and wear a HRM that I've had and used since January. I find the MFP is either the same or slightly below the reading on my HRM but the machines read half or less than that. If I went by machines, I'd think I'd burned 20 calories in 10 minute running!

wow...first time I have heard that...I'm curious, does your HRM have a chest strap?

Yes, I have a Polar Ft40. It seems more on par with MFP estimates. Maybe it's the gym equipment I'm using wrong, but the heart rate reading is completely the same on both.

    Great article.

I visited my sister last month and used her treadmill for a 3 mile jog/2 mile walk (about 65 minutes total time). It told me I had burned over 900 calories!!! My treadmill says about half that for the same workout. I couldn't believe the variation from one machine to another. I half wonder if it's intentional to make people feel good about the workout -- they can really think they're making progress. I hope it's just a glitch on her machine. That's ridiculous.
