Getting definition - WITHOUT a trainer

Is it really possible to get as toned as I want, WITHOUT personal training? I just want to lose like 6 more lbs (which seem to be VERY hard now) and then start lifting weights to tone. I keep hearing people say "you should get a trainer" - but it's just VERY expensive. Any thoughts? Ideas? And how drastic of a change in muscle tone can my body have in just 3 months?
