Shoes for squats?

Hi
I'm doing Stronglifts 5 x5 and use the squat rack. My personal trainer (had him for a few sessions in the beginnng) advised me to squat with bare feet/socks as my trainers were bought specifically for running and are structured as I over-pronate.

Just wondered what everyone else wears?...in my gym the guys seem to wear Toms or Flossy shoes (flat kung-fu type plimsols) but I don't have any. I'm the only girl in the free weight area, and only one of three people that use the squat rack, so no-one to copy or get advice from

Am I ok in socks only? (i dont ever walk across the gym without shoes for safety reasons) or are there a specific type of flat shoe out there for lifting?

Thanks peeps x

I'm also doing Stronglifts 5X5. I usually wear my Vibram Five Fingers but sometimes do it barefoot. I work out on my back porch so no gym rules to worry about. I only wear shoes to keep from getting splinters in my feet.

Flat shoes like converse all stars or some cheap flat plimsols, squat in bare feet it the gym is ok with it.

I have issues with ankle mobility so I use a proper olympic lifting shoe.

chuck taylors are very popular. That's what the wife uses.

    I use new balance minimus.

You can get actual squatting ehos, though...

I use Nike Free's and they are awesome for squatting.

I wear wrestling shoes; they are flat with no cushioning, just the inner sole and it isn't much.
