Get fitted at a running store in your area. You will probably go up a size from your "everyday" shoes.. Look for a wider toe box and good heel fit. You shouldnt have to lace them tight to fit. A quick google search for good running shoes 2012 will give you a good start.

Congrats on c25k! You will do great!

I just bought my first real pair last week. I went to an actual running store (The Running Store, in Edmonton, AB), and they had me walk barefoot on the floor and also jog on a treadmill to see how my feet move. I was told I have flexible feet that go heel to toe in a rounded motion and they suggested shoes for me based on that. I definitely reccomend doing something similar.

I ended up purchasing Adidas: AdiZero Tempo 4, heres a link if you want to see the store and shoe:

A real running store that can properly fit you and watch you run is going to be better than any advice you can get here

I just want to echo what they've all said ^^.

Running store. Don't go to a discount sporting goods store. Get fitted properly. Choose the absolute comfiest instead of what you like the look of. My shoes are ugly but I've been using the same brand/style for years. They just fit and they work. Once you know what shoe you like, you can save $ by buying online. Definitely go one size up from everyday shoes... for running down hills - your toes will shuffle forward and you need to leave them room to do so or you can lose your toenails.

I went to a running store and got fitted- was so excited! I have very high arches and instep, narrow heels, and wide ball. On second walk got a huge painful blister on side heel. Have tried everything to pad, protect it to no avail. been back walking in nike flip flops for the last few weeks. Any advice for treating/preventing blisters? Bought $10 moisture wicking anti- blister socks too. Shoes are Brooks Glycerin 10.

I would say go to as many specialist sports shoe stores as you can and be measured - check out the shoes they say are suitable - make a decision when you have tried several different pairs in several different shops.

Finally do NOT be scared to take them back after a couple of wears as most good shops will be more than happy to fit you again if you are not happy - also remember that you can remove the factory insoles and try other gel insoles which is how I found my perfect pair

Just like everyone else who posted Go to a running store and get properly fitted for a good running shoe. I have been through two pairs for shoes doing 4 half marathons last year. My particular running shoe is Brooks Ghost...they are great for me. Hang in there you can do anything you set your mind to. Good luck on the 5K.
