Ok through my reading on here I have read a few things. I have read that if you are eating at a defecit you can't gain muscle, but its neccessary to do weight lifting while losing weight. I've also read that the only way to gain muscle is to be eating above daily allowance.
So what is the point of doing weight lifting while eating at a defecit? Is it just to keep current muscle and not lose any? So confused..

It'll maintain the current muscle mass that you have and help insure that the weight that you do lose is fat, not muscle mass.0

You want to maintain your lean body mass and burn fat stores... Weight training is a vital part to this process, your right in the fact to gain muscle you must be in a calorie surplus but the one exception to that rule is the obese (which was me at 560 lbs.) having that much fat stores to pull from even while in a calorie deficit can provide the body with enough to build some muscle... But for the vast majority, maintaining what muscle you have underlying the fat is key.... Best of Luck...0
