I see this question asked a lot on here and I was just reading the Sept issue of Women's Heath. Question:

One day I might eat 800 calories next day 1500. Am I blowing my diet.

Answer:

You could be. The problem with the erratic eating is that it can become a vicious cycle: Undereat one day to make up for a night of drinks and dessert, and you'll be so hungry the next day that you'll be likely to overdo it. In time, this can slow your resting metabolic rate, so you burn fewer calories overall. Aim to eat roughly the same number of calories per day; keeping healthy snacks like fruit or nuts on hand can help make sure you do this.

Um, sorry...I will disagree with this one:wink:
Your metabolism is much more likely to slow down and stay that way if you eat a low set-amount of calories every day. Then it adjusts to that amount of calories!
zig-zagging is effective and keeps your metab up.
These really are just my opinions though, because I also believe in taking the weekends "off" to some degree and not counting things. The reason being that if this is how I want to eat forever, I have to have some flexibility on the weekends at least.
    AND...it's working.
