I have a vibration plate at home which I use for 10 minutes each day but not sure of the calories I'm burning? Anyone know?

I think it depends on the exercises you are doing on the plate. I'm not sure that vibrations add to the calories lost, but you can track the basic exercise to see what you are burning.0

I had a client company that makes the plate used in the NASA programs. Off hand I don't know the calories burned but I can point you in the direction of getting this and other data as there are many studies done on this particular one to document the benefits. Go to PubMed and do a search (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/). This is the gov't website that houses every bit of published data.

Personally it sounds gimmicky to me. I suppose it burns some calories but it doesn't appear to really do much for you other than shake you. How much muscle energy does it take to get shaken?0 -

Its a gimmick - if you stand on it, you might as well stand on the deck and do nothing - same calorie burn....0

My guess would be 50 calories per 5 minutes, depending on the intensity of your session.
I must admit, I've never used one before or even seen one in use.
I'm old school and choose not to incorporate this into my fitness routines.
Sounds like fun though.

I used to run a business with these machines. They DO WORK in 10 minute exercises each day 3 times a week, but as far as calories goes they don't burn a lot. You don't move much during the exercise as you hold the position and the machine vibrates and tones while you hold the pose. People who used my machines were people who didn't have 1.5hours to go to the gym and wanted a quck fix. What they do is work the muscles super quick during each exercise and tone them. Toned muscles need more energy so along with a calorie controlled diet you WILL lose inches and tone up. I had several clients lose many inches from their bodies in 4 week programmes. The most spectacular being 14" in total. We measured top arms, chest, waist, hips (widest part round the belly if it was large), top thighs, knees and calves. I could lose weight in calorie deficit by playing with a yo-yo for ten minutes a day, that doesn't make a yo-yo and effective fat loss tool.

I was in the mall yesterday and the guy (who must have noticed I was fit) called me over. I said I wasn't interested (to save him embarrassment) and he replied "if you could do the SAME work for 10 minutes without having to go the gym for 30 minutes, that doesn't interest you?" I replied back "10 minutes of getting shaken and stirred isn't my idea of physical exercise." He just shrugged his shoulders.
This is just another "gimmick" to get people who really DON'T want to exercise to think they are. There's not to say that there isn't studies that show that vibration plate training isn't helpful (you can actually increase strength), but you still have to EXERCISE on it to be helpful.
My whole philosophy is "if you won't do it for FREE, buying a machine or apparatus isn't going to encourage you much. It will end up being an expensive clothes hanger in the end."
