I'm toying with the idea of running the Tough Mudder in my area next April. Anyone got any experiences (good or bad) to share? Advice?

I've publicly committed to run the Tough Mudder around here, next July, and I've never so much as run a 5k so I'd love to hear advice too. I'm running a Warrior Dash later this month to get some idea of what it's like to run up a hill and into obstacles but 22k is a lot further than 5k.

I'll be doing Insanity starting the week of July 23 for cardio and some functional strength, and I plan to do one of RunKeeper's half-marathon training plans (Couch to 5k seems to have worked well). Probably some rock climbing and adding a pull-up bar to my "home gym" since my upper body strength sucks.

Lots of people seem to recommend those Vibram Five Finger shoes for racing in, and since barefoot running uses a different stride and more calf strength I'll probably replace my current runners with barefoot runners when they wear out in a few months.

There is not a lot of running involved. At least in mine there wasn't. There was hiking, downhill. Carrying a log downhill then back up. Climbing through mud. Pulling yourself through mud while on your belly. Ice water. Dangerous terrain. You won't want to run in a lot of spots. There is also a lot of hills depending on your race. It's a rough course but if you are determined, you will finish. It took me 6 hours and I'm okay with that because I earned my headband. I suggest stairclimbing for sure. I'm tempted to try the barefoot runners myself but I'm glued to my saucony and they work fine for me because I get trail runners. Good luck!
