Do you like tofu? Soy is one of the most efficient forms of protein, and tofu can make a great snack if prepared properly. Here's what I do: (1) press the liquid from a block of tofu (I like NaSoya extra because it has lots of vitamins). I just put the block between two plates with a couple of heavy cans on top; (2) freeze the pressed block. This helps the texture to be "meatier"; i.e., it has a nice "bite" to it; (3) thaw, then slice into bite-sized cubes; (4) marinate in your choice of liquids, depending on the flavor you are trying to achieve; tofu will take on the flavors of the marinade. I like Bragg's Aminos (it's like soy sauce-you can find it in the natural food section) with a little bit of pure maple syrup. The longer you marinade, the better the flavor; (5) bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Turn ot over half-way through the cooking process; this gives it a more even texture.

I like mine sprinkled with a little bit of nutritional yeast (find it in the natural food section). This gives it a little bit of a cheesy taste, and adds a significant amount of vitamin B12, which is the only vitamin vegans cannot derive from eating plant-based foods.

You can refrigerate or freeze these little bites in snack-sized portions and pull them out as needed. Because this process takes a while, I usually make several blocks worth at a time and freeze a bunch. Just pop them in the microwave for a bit to bring them to room temperature. Enjoy!

I have beans with everything: pasta, rice, salads. Homemade hummus, peanut butter, lentils and quinoa are also good protein sources. I try not to eat too many veggie burgers unless they are homemade as I dont want to eat too many processed foods. Soy can be a good source, but don't rely on it. I have a soy allergy that developed from eating too many processed soy products.

Oh man I've been wanting to try Vega so bad but it's so expensive! Have you found a good price anywhere?

Whole Foods has individual packets that you can try (Sprouts, too). I found good prices on tubs of it on Amazon and Supplement Warehouse. Also, check veganbodybuiding.com because they have specials all the time and a lot of good ideas and links.

Oh ... the almond milk yogurt is by SO delicious, but it's brand new and hasn't made it to stores yet. I'm excited about it! I add silken tofu to shakes when I need calories and protein, too. I can't taste it and it acts like yogurt by adding thickness.

    Feel free to add me!

Oh, and tofurky! I try not to eat too much processed food, but tofurky deli slices are so good and so easy when I don't have time to cook or something.
