Microwave Popcorn

Is it just me or are all of the microwave popcorn companies very misleading about the amount of calories in a bag of popcorn??

Try 94% fat free popcorn - it's actually a pretty healthy snack and low calorie! Always curbs my late in the day hunger pangs :)

Hmm how so? What am I missing?
I was just comparing Orville Reddenbacher to Pop Weaver today actually and wondering why Pop Weaver's FULL bag was the same calories as 1/2 a Orville R bag?!

Well, a bag of pop secret says it is 4 cups for the whole bag... That's about 1/3 of what the bag holds.

Don't eat that icky stuff! You get a teeny tiny bag for 100 calories and it's lined with carcinogens. Get yourself an air popper for 20-30 bucks and a bottle of whole kernels... 2 cups of that for 61 calories!!!

Yeah I got a box one time that said each serving was 100 calories but then I found out that each bag had 2.5 servings...
So now I just get the simple 100 calorie single serving bags
  • Well, I guess I'm dumb...lol I read the box a little more carefully and I see where I was wrong.

    Sounds like a great idea!

I pop mine in a brown paper bag in the microwave - 1/4 cup of kernels (serving size on the package, or use less) in the bag, fold the top down twice and run it like you would for store bought microwave stuff. SO much cheaper (I get 2lbs of kernels for less than $2 at my local market), and you control what goes on it! I like mine with a tablespoon of coconut oil & a bit of salt. Good stuff!

^This- It's my new favorite bedtime snack.

OP- it's not just popcorn, food labeling is often misleading- you just have to be diligent about reading the serving sizes. Another example I came across recently is Gatorade G2 packets- meant to be mixed in a bottle of water. A portion size is 2/5 of a packet! How the F*** could you divide that up? (I get it, it's meant to be mixed in a 20 oz bottle of water which is 2.5 8-oz servings, but still- they shouldn't be able to sell multiple portions that are impossible to separate)

Woah! I had no idea you could do this! Are you talking like a lunch bag? And do you add the oil and salt before or after popping? This is GENIUS!

Yep, a plain old lunch bag, and don't put anything but kernels in the bag to pop it - add the toppings after you dump it in the bowl, just like you would with air popped. Works like a charm - we eat tons of popcorn around here. And you can reuse the bags - they last about 4 poppings before they usually get a hole in the bottom corner.

There's a recipe for brown bag popcorn. I don't know why but it really is fine with the staples in the bag, in the microwave.

I just fold the bag down twice, no staples, and all the popcorn stays in the bag just fine.
