Gaining muscle not losing fat? Is that possible?

Options
I've been adding strength training to my workouts and I love that I'm getting stronger. However, the last time I checked the scale I gained two pounds. I freaked out but I haven't weighed myself since then. My clothes haven't gotten looser. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. My diet is vegan (Not against meat, just have trouble digesting it. No tolerance for eggs in its whole form, I can handle feta cheese but most cheeses, no). I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or what the formula should be. I don't really eat a lot of carbs. Just recently started eating spelt bread but I do enjoy fruits. I've lost some weight in the past, I don't know what could be wrong now. Thoughts?

weight fluctuations are completely normal and could be 5 pounds from morning to night.. adding strength training will cause extra water retention for awhile.

If you're eating at a caloric deficit it's virtually impossible to add muscle mass (strength training will help you retain what you have but increasing it requires a caloric surplus) - you didn't mention in the OP how long it had been between weigh ins. As Dave198lbs mentioned it's most likely a water weight fluctuation.

When does the water retention go away?
