What do you eat/drink before/after your workout?

DH and I are 1 week into Insanity and he keeps seeing the 'recovery formula' advertised after the workouts (FTR I am not interested in buying from BeachBody as I perceive their products to be over-priced). Anyway I'd like to know what everyone likes to use before/after their workouts and why. And how much it costs per serving. And whether it tastes decent or crapalicious (I will not be buying anything that tastes crapalicious no matter how amazing it's supposed to make us perform, sorry LOL).

TIA for any help. And sorry after the Insanity workout just now I am too tired to bother searching, thus the new topic. ;-)

ETA: We normally do our workouts mid-afternoon on the weekends but during the week we normally workout around 5-7 pm after he gets home from work. Just in case timing factors into your suggestions. :-)

    I workout first thing.
    I eat a banana (or an apple) and drink about 20 ounces of water.

    After my workout I have a nice big breakfast.
    Lately I've been having greek yogurt with peanut butter and chia seeds in it.

    I use Jillian Michaels Vanilla Whey, you can get it at wal-mart. It has 10 servings and it's $9.99 so not bad, I also enjoy Cytosport muscle milk in chocolate, it's like 20 or 30 servings for $25 also at walmart.
