Charity running vest arrived

My SSPCA charity running vest arrived today. (It's a medium and fits).
I have a small problem. Living in Scotland I have a tan less than a vampire. I have lost over a stone through diet changes but my upper body is just not toned.
I've just had a huge stress moment. I can't wear it. I just feel WRONG. I feel like Rab C Nesbit.
What is the normal running attire? Can I just wear a normal black t-shirt under it and put this vest over it? (The chances are it will be raining during the event anyway) Is that the norm?
I think the reality that I will be in a big race is starting to hit me!
Any advice?

by vest I am assuming you mean a singlet?
Normally people don't wear cotton during running and not when it'll be raining for sure. you'll be carrying around a few extra lbs of water with you by the end of the race.0 -

People do wear tee-shirts with a sleeveless one over the top, yes. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in because feeling self-conscious because of your attire will be the least of your worries and you will expend so much energy worrying about that, that it will spoil your enjoyment of your event.

I assume this is your first?
One race does not make me an expert, but I did my fair share of research ahead of time anticipating a very wet weekend here in England.
Now you can wear whatever you want and put your vest over it but it's probably a bad idea if rain is forecast. The more clothes the more material to soak in the water. It won't keep you any warmer but it will make you carry less weight around the course. Having said that, if you aren;t going to feel comfortable or confident with that much of your body on display then don't do it. My suggestion would be to put on a running t-shirt, one of those that is breathable and doesn't hold water as much as a regular cotton T.
By the way, I was nervouse as hell last week about all the unknowns of what race day would be like - well it was fantastic. A brilliant experience but do your research so you can prepare and that will help your confidence. I cannot find the link at the moment but there is a wonderful post by BerryH on here who shares great tips for your first race. I recommend it.0 -
If you're going to feel more comfortable with a t-shirt underneath then, by all means, wear one but (as pointed out in an earlier post) avoid cotton, you'll end up feeling cold and clammy, a polyester "technical" fabric would be better (a football jersey would probably do the trick - they're usually made of wicking / fast drying fabrics)0
