low carb experimentation/critical carb level

Hi I am just starting up on a low carb diet in atkins style and just wonder at what intervals others who do this diet increase the carbs? 20g is mighty low and while I feel fine I am struggling to eat above 1100 calories. So that's just like a low cal diet anyway which is not what I wanted to test out.
How regularly do people increase the carb intake by 5g? Once a week as suggested in the book or does anyone do it sooner than this say every 5 days or every 3 days? Am curious to know my critical carb level but don't want to spend a very long time on such low calories.
In fact, for those who have tested it out, what's your critical carb level?
