    Protein will not hurt you.

It helps in the muscle building process, keeps you fuller and more satisfied, helps to heal you faster if you are injured.............

Yup. Protein is your friend. The default settings for MFP set carbs too high and protein too low, IMO.

This is probably helping you alot more then you think. Protein is the macronutient which produces the highest thermogenic effect within your body (meaning it requires more effort to burn). As long as you are under your calorie goal, the more protein the better!

If you are following the default settings on MFP, it's more than likely not accurate for your body. If you actually figure out the numbers for yourself personally, I bet you're not even getting enough protein. That was my case anyway. It had me set at 80 g/day, when I should actually be getting around 165. It also had my carbs set way too low.

A good site to go to figure out your own personal numbers is http://www.acaloriecounter.com/diet/

It's a little lengthy, but if you have the time, you'll learn a ton while getting your own numbers as well.
