Anyone watch the home run derby last night?

What did you think about the fans booing Cano?

I was born in New York and am a Yankees fan and a fan of Cano. That said, I understand why they booed. He said he was going to pick a Kansas City representative [presumably Billy Butler] and then didn't.

I have friends in Kansas City who were happy that Trumbo was picked after watching the derby--he mashed. But who is to say that Butler wouldn't have?

We are HUGE Detroit Tigers fans... we were happy with Prince!! :) We went to the All-Star games when it was in Detroit a few years back. It was awesome. I agree though - it is a feel good thing for the home run derby...

I thought it was tasteless. The HR Derby is a charity event- the fans need to get over it. That being said, I am not the least bit upset that Cano did so poorly. He is apparently saving the HRs for the rest of the season- Go Yankees!!

The derby was pretty good, Cano getting booed once okay you got it out but the whole time he batted...BS just terrible sportsmanship!

As a Red Sox fan im usually not one to be against Yankee booing but the Derby well all All star events is where loyalty takes a seat and you enjoy the game as a whole. Even last year even with 2 Sox on the squad it was hard to root against Cano and his Dad.

Exactly- I root for my team to win but never against a player to lose. They are all fantastic players regardless of the uniforms they wear. Plus, at some point, if they are good enough, they wil be wearing pinstripes eventually! LOL

I'm from Kansas City and I think it was absolutely in poor taste to NOT pick a representative from the city where the events are being hosted. Scratch that... It was a d!ck move and a total slap in the face to our city and our baseball team. He deserved to be booed.

I think the commentary was AWFUL. They were trying to create rifts between players/teams where there were none, stirring the pot for the sake of the show. And then they have the gall to say the fans were the ones being rude? Take a look at yourselves, suits.

Personally I didn't like that the entire crowd booed Cano, but it has to show something. It's not just a bunch of sore-losers, when you have a stadium filled like that, it's deeper than that. (I also admit it was kind of funny.)

I enjoyed the home run derby. I am a fan of both Fielder and Bautista...and it was good to see both of them excel at the event.
Trumbo was impressive as well....gave Bautista a bit of a challenge.

As or Cano, I didn't think that the boo-ing was necessary. Kind of rude!
I understand the fans would be upset but have some manners.

He deserved to be honored? He has 16 home runs. That's five less than the average of the other four players on the AL squad.

    Nothing in life is deserved.

Edit: And that doesn't even mention that David Ortiz, Josh Hamilton, and Curtis Granderson, the players that Cano invited first, declined invitation. So, best case scenario, Butler was eighth most deserving. And that doesn't even include Adam Dunn being passed over again.

His role as captain was to put together a team that would win. In the end, he went with the BEST players. Again, this is a charity event aimed at raising money based on the most HRs. If KC had a player that could compare, he would have picked him. Booing him once would have shown your frustration. Booing the whole time he was up shows poor sportsmanship.

I understand your point in regards to "better" players that declined or who fans find to be more deserving. I was simply referring to what th city's fans were feeling. In the end, you all are right, it is for charity... So why not pick ONE player from the hosting city's team???

Let's face it, Cano was in a no-win situation, just like Fielder was last year. On one hand he is told to field the best group of hitters so his team can win and then there is suddenly an unwritten rule that he has to pick a lesser player from the host city. Butler is a great player but his HR numbers just weren't there compared to the others. So does Cano add Butler to be nice or does he go for the win? What would you all do? Me, I go for the win which is what my job as captain is all about.

Butler has 17 home runs, more than 4 of the players that were in the derby

Butler only has 16 home runs. As captain of the AL team Cano only gets to pick three people. Cano has 20, Trumbo has 22, Bautista has 27 and Fielder has 16. Although Fielder has hit one less HR than Butler so far this season, he is far more known for his HR skills than Butler. Smart money would be on Prince over Butler any day

For the NL, Kemp (captain) has 12, Gonzales has 17, Beltran has 20 and McCutchen has 18.

With 16 HRs, Butler has only hit more than Kemp and Fielder but he can only play on the AL team so he only beat Fielder by 1 HR. Again, historically, Fielder would be a far better pick.
