My Funny Facebook Experiment

To clarify...
- You created a fake Facebook profile...
- With concocted "personal information..."
- A fabricated name and identity...
- And a stolen picture...
And you're judging the "character, sincerity and moral fabric" of others?
Really?
LOL! Great point!
A little harsh.... what is so insincere about a social experiment? Yep, I am scum of the earth...you think that?
REALLY? lol0 -
To be fair, I am sure on MFP there are people who have sent friend requests because the person was hot. Let's face it, I am one hot kitty cat.0

I totally agree, it is human nature. I guess what is amazing is the number of them. Maybe I just wanted to assume the best.0

Now make one with a not so attractive pic and a plain jane name and see what the results are. Vastly different results is my prediction!
There's nothing 'plain' about the name Jane. Lol!
haha I agree! My middle name is Jane! Perhaps we should start a new phrase... plain Cain .... it still rhymes!0 -

Harsh? For me, my statement was downright "warm and fuzzy."
Perhaps I'm jumping to conclusions, but since you asked... this is how I interpreted your original post...
A. You opened your post with "Long story, but..." which implies that there is much more to the "story" than you are disclosing in your summary.
B. Facebook suggests "friends" pursuant a DOS (Degree-of-Separation) Algorithm. In short, Facebook quantifies the information you provide and "associates" you with other site members. The foundation and catalyst for this algorithm is your list of existing friends. The only way for someone to "find" you "at random" on Facebook, is for you to first populate the system with data from which the algorithm can associate matches.
It is nearly impossible to find people you actually know on Facebook, when you have specifics about their age, location, etc... let alone a "fake profile" of which no one would have cause, nor reason, to look-up in the first place.
Which means, you had to "friend" a group of people first, before "others" could start to request you in return.
C. Thus, in conclusion, you created a fake profile, with fabricated data and a pirated picture, then "friended" people you already knew... fraudulently. Your claim that this act was a "social experiment" makes this scenario even more creepy and weird. All of which is further exacerbated by the notion that there is a "longer story" justifying your actions.
Prima facie, your question of "what is so insincere about a social experiment" is equivalent to asking "what is so unromantic about date-rape."
Then again. Maybe I'm over analyzing it.
Over analyzing? You think?
Ok, you are smart and know big words and theories I get it.
If it was "warm and fuzzy" then it ends there.
I don't know why I am putting so much energy in justifying this... Long story for me does not go back to me torturing farm animals behind my shed or crying over someone who won't be my friend...lol. It started as a joke to a friend.
I never denied friending some people in the first place, I stated that and if that is shady or whatever than sue me...lol
Yes, I created a fake profile, was it with a pirated picture? You are jumping to conclusions there. I could have friends who are attractive?
I did not friend one person I already "knew". They were all total strangers.
Social experiments are far from creepy, perhaps in your line of work they are. I am a huge fan of documentaries and the way society behaves. I find this stuff interesting.
Prima Facie...whatever the heck that even means... you can draw comparisons between any scenario as equivalents but they are not always in the same league. If you want to write this off as illegal, creepy or immoral then I sure hope you don't ever break the law. I personally don't even know how you extract this type of argument from a simple experiment, the world revolves around it from marketing companies, politics and so on....
Oh well, I guess we will just agree to disagree but you are intense.0 -
yeah people are shallow, facebook is a fun place for me to poke fun at some of my more sheltered friends. I really like what happened here....

Long story but I made a fake Facebook profile with some crazy made up foreign sounding name and used an attractive fit guy as the profile picture.
I added a few "friends" who were complete strangers. Within seconds I got confirmations and they accepted my request. I thought this was interesting but then kinda forgot about it and ruled it out as a fluke and maybe just people being polite.
2 days later my inbox was flooded with friend requests and people (primarily females) saying they knew me. I don't know about you but I don't get that kinda love with my real profile. Are people really that shallow?
Anyway, I thought it was an interesting discovery.
Have a great day

I have pictures of him for blackmail purposes.
OK, how about trying the same thing but in reverse?
Put some dumpy, sad pictures of some pathetic looking guy - a George from Seinfeld sort of guy.0 -
