NewBalance N7 HRM - Question

I bought a New Balance N7 HRM a while ago (4 months or so ago). As of late (can't remember if this used to happen before) I have started noticing that when I am running full steam or doing other HIIT(such as Insanity), my heart rate drops to 100 - 120 bpm. But when I slow down or in the rest period of HIIT, it goes up to 170 - 180s and then starts to gradually decrease(as expected).
If I do steady low/mid intensity exercise, it seems to keep up ok.
I am wondering if my HRM is broken. I don't recall this happening with my previous HRM (currently RIP thanks to my puppy).
Anyone else experience this? Is it just my unit that's broken? or battery is going low? Mind you, I am huffing and puffing as you'd normally expect during high intensity workouts, so I have to think its the HRM.

I have the N4 and got some weird readings at one point. Changed the battery in the strap and it's worked great ever since. Might be a good place to start - at least batteries aren't too expensive.0
