Degenerative Joint Disease at 29?? :(

I started running (C25K) a couple months ago on my treadmill. After my first outside run I developed pain in my ankle (which i suspected was a stress fracture), and after two weeks of appointments and tests I was just told I have degenerative joint disease in my heels and ankles. Does anyone know what this means for my running? I'm only 29, and I'm freaked out at this diagnosis. I also have cysts on the bottoms of my heels to top it off (seriously painful sometimes.) I am being referred to a podiatrist, but I'm looking for any info I can get in the mean time.
