Protein shakes when losing weight??

Hello! I'm trying to lose 5 kilos, and I work out at the gym doing weights, running, yoga, cycling and boxing. Some people have been telling me to get protein shakes but I'm scared if I do I won't lose any weight. What do you think?

I'm trying to lose, and I drink at least one a day, because I'm lifting. Just fit it into your calorie goal and you're fine.

protein = protein. the shake is nothing special. you're basically asking "Some people have been telling me to get chicken but I'm scared if I eat chicken I won't lose any weight. ".

Depends on your diet. If you're really restricting calories then you probably want to skip drinking any calories and just eat them instead (fill you up, get more fiber, etc...). If you're looking to add protein, you could always eat some eggs (egg whites to cut out the fat), chicken, fat free cottage cheese, or some other high protein low calorie food.

Protein shakes are just another way to get calories and macronutrients into your diet.

If you fit them into your daily calorie/macro allowance you shouldn't change your weight loss progress.
If you are meeting all your goals without them, then they aren't likely to make much difference, you could save your money for other things.

I start nearly everyday with a protein shake and haven't found it's curtailed any weight loss!

    Me too :)
  • Protein shakes are filling for me. I use them as a meal supplement for lunch or dinner on days I over eat breakfast or lunch. In general I think it is best to avoid drinking calories, but water just doesn't quench hunger like an occasional 120 calorie protein shake will.

Just eat food. Would a "shake" be part of your normal diet ? Thought not.
  • Okay, thanks everyone! :-)

Personally, yes. I actually look forward to my protein shakes, they are a treat and help me keep my macros where they should be. *shrug*

I drink hemp protein. It's natural, high fibre and high protein. It also contains alot of the amino acids etc that i don't get from eating meat. I find I need the extra protein kick cos I'm veggie.
