If it had been earlier in the day I may not be so paranoid. lol
I have started a cleaning routine (we'll see how long this lasts) to see if that will help me keep the house cleaner. I have a couple of hours of it to do today, so that may be all I get done as far as exercise goes. Maybe I'll take a walk this evening.
Dentist this morning. Hoping for no news.
    Push ups at some point.
I decided to lower my cal intake to 1270 because I seem to think it's okay to go over cals by 100. :ohwell: This will keep me more where I need to be. I shouldn't complain about not seeing a difference since I have not been consistent, but I do complain.
We will be changing our diet as I see that DH is really struggling with Acid Reflux. I don't know what I am doing but we'll make it happen somehow.
Can't sit here long because I lose motivation.
    Have a great Monday all!

Only got an hour of biking in yesterday. It was getting warm and sunny. Some more today with a yoga chaser.

My husband was eating a scone last night. I took a bite, naturally. He offered me more saying, "it's more fun to share." Novel thought. My competition style of eating has never allowed for this. It was more like, "it's more fun to steal." So my new "treat" motto is: It's more fun to share.

    Sharing, boogaloo.

Sorry I keep checking out over the weekend. Glad you all enjoyed my dinner description.
Mary, I'm so happy to hear that your kitty is feeling better! Fingers crossed that she is past the worst of it and will continue improving. And "yoga chaser" - that's funny.

I managed to finish off my week of pushups on Friday. I think I will repeat this level one more time, though - I am making it through with fewer pauses, but am still finding myself really sore and/or tight the next day. I had a massage on Saturday (yay), which really helped; it is very tempting to take the week off to continue stretching and recovering. But, then I will probably just lose ground. The compromise might be to just do one long set (exhaustion test) each day, and then go back to the regular program next week.... we'll see how I feel.

So, not much exercise over the weekend because I didn't want to undo my nice relaxation. Also, not much computer time, which is probably a good thing. Tonight is belly dancing.

MM, on work days for breakfast I usually have cereal w/yogurt or "milk" (lately I've been trying hemp milk) and fruit when I have it. Lunch is either leftover from dinner or an Amy's frozen meal. Sometimes a salad if I can get my act together enough in the morning to make one before heading to work. Also, you were asking about salad dressings - I often don't bother because I'll put cheese and fruit on my salads, but if I do have use dressing, it's usually something that we whip up on the spot. Vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, and any herbs that seem good. Sometimes a little sugar or sweetener of some kind, sometimes lemon or lime juice instead of vinegar. Honey-lime is a tasty combination. And then there's always salsa.

    3-part novel boogaloo!

    Morning ladies,

I'm in a slump. My special lady time has arrived, I haven't worked out for three days (Bikram didn't happen on Saturday, because I discovered last minute I was expected to sing at a friend's birthday party, so I practiced). I'm experiencing the second week of teaching let down, in which all of the students freak out and I can't get a hold of my boss. Essentially, I want to eat cake for lunch and stay home all day. (but I won't)

Today, I'm determined to tape it up and get back in the game, which will mean a trip to the gym. I also just ordered Jillian Michael's "no more trouble spots" DVD (which looks to be all strength training stuff) since I'm in a weird place about working out with weights at the gym (it's gotten really testoterone-y as of late over there, and I'm in a self-conscious weird mind mode). I also ordered her "hot bod in a box" flash cards, so I can hopefully put together little workouts when I do feel tough at the gym. I'm stuck in a cardio rut. I like cardio, but it's just not giving me the results I want.

I was on the verge of ordering p90x yesterday, I even did the fitness test (which, I confess, I didn't find very challenging even though I'm sure the workouts are.) I just don't know that I could abandon my studio yoga or spin entirely. Also, I like days off. I'm just feeling very squishy. My vanity has set in, and I want people to look at me and think "she works out really hard". I want it to show.

So, I'm trying to focus on the idea of my new signature quote, and experience the joy of working out for its own reward.

Enjoying it during with no expectations boogaloo.:flowerforyou:

Yay! No cavities! He said everything looks good, except I need to floss more often. Don't they always tell you that?

I floss every day, at least, and sometimes twice (due to teeth paranoia. . .long story) and they still tell me to floss more.

Forgot to mention - for breakfast - cereal and milk (and coffee with milk). For snacks: PB and apples or carrots and celery, or fruit, dried fruit, crackers (usually some sort of higher fiber rice cracker). Just discovered GoRaw snacks. Expensive but good and just food.

    I forgot, too. . .

I (almost) always drink my breakfast. I make a smoothie, and add protein powder to it. I've switched to tea in the am, but occasionally still have coffee. Sometimes I'll pre-make a batch of oatmeal during the week and warm it up and add berries and nuts, but lately I'm trying to cool it on the grain carbs.

For snacks, pretty much what Mary said. Plus, I also will have string cheese or sometimes some sliced leftover turkey breast or something. I've also taken to making vegetable soup, pureeing it and then warming up a cup of it for a snack (this is way better than it sounds and very filling. I'm not good at getting my veggies in unless my blender's already chewed them for me. . .gross but true.) I also eat a lot of nuts, because they fill me up and are portable.

Oh, I forgot about snacks. I usually have fruit or yogurt or a Clif Kid ZBar when I'm at work (or occasionally a granola bar from our snack cabinet - pretty much junk food, but at least they don't have HFCS). I think I need to do something about the Clif bars, though - they are really tasty, but I think because of that I eat them whenever I have them with me, not just when I'm hungry. When I'm hungry for a snack at home, nuts (mostly almonds) and carrots are usually my go-to. V, the veggie soup is a good idea. Sometimes I just take out part of it and puree it and then add it back - so the texture isn't so uniformly smooth, but isn't too broth-y, either. Peanut butter & something is another good idea - I get tired of yogurt, but it's very convenient.

Thanks for the ideas ladies! I am mostly on the right track then. I have a really hard time eating veggies, but I have found that I will eat them if I have a veggie dip. Probably not the best thing, but it does help me to eat them.
Another friend of mine has smoothies almost every morning and she puts whey powder in it. I guess I will have to look into powders and find some smoothie recipes to change things up for me. They really do fill you up?
I can tell I am getting tired of the same old stuff because I don't eat the leftovers. I need to change it up. I have to change it for DH's sake.
I got a whole lot accomplished today! I still don't understand how you can clean for two hours but the house is still a mess. lol
    Productive day, so no complaints!

    Good morning!

Today more cleaning. Tumbling class. Library. And maybe a walk if it's not raining. High of 74! Whoo-hoo!

Believe it or not, that's all I have to say! :noway:

    Have a great Tuesday!

Lots of rain today, so no biking. Will walk on treadmill instead.

I managed to get 90 minutes of biking in yesterday - begins to hurt your butt after awhile - and I have a semi-comfy seat. If it doesn't rain, the weather looks wonderful on Wed and Thurs, so I'll get some more biking in before Saturday. I hope we get a chance to enjoy this cold front (be outside without rain).
I think I'm going to miss hard yoga again this week. Cat feeding really puts a dent in my schedule.

    Bike butt, boogaloo.

Raining here today, too. After 19 days of straight sunshine, it's actually nice.

Just got news from my gym that they're adding boxing and group weight training classes in October. Squee!

I am really feeling on the verge of depression right now, so my goal is to keep working out (as it's my anti-depressant medication:wink: ). I go through these phases where I'm crazy self-conscious and I'm having one now. I had to force myself to do weights yesterday because there's one trainer at the gym who I think (and I've been told by female trainers) is creepy and he seems to always be there. I can't wait for my new toys (DVDs) to get here. I'm also considering just buying some resistance bands and a medicine ball (I already have weights) and just doing weights here. Mostly, I just have to do it. Yoga is firming me up, but I need to balance the areas it's not getting to.

Tonight is spinning. Whether I want to or not.

Move and the heart follows boogaloo.:flowerforyou:

Sorry you are feeling down on yourself, V. I don't really have any advice, except I've been there, and it will pass. And sorry about the creepy guys at the gym. I've never had the guts to go into the free weight area, myself - just the FitLinxx circuit machines. :ohwell:

Today was a terribly long and hectic day at work, and DH had a rough day, too... so I, uh, blew it after work with a couple of granola bars (why did I let myself buy them? being on sale doesn't make them any better for me!) AND a couple of beers. :embarassed: I am not doing well lately at avoiding stress eating. I am disappointed - I thought I really had a better handle on my eating a year ago before I stopped 'focusing' on losing weight so much and focused on my project instead. I am proud that I have maintained or even lost a couple of pounds since then, but I just don't feel like I'm keeping myself in control as much as I used to. Actually, that's not even it - I had gotten to the point when I didn't feel like I *had* to keep myself "in control", because my habits were good and I didn't want the bad things so much, or for as bad reasons. I still have a lot of the good habits, of course. But somewhere in the stress of finishing my degree I fell back on food as a crutch, and I still seem to be leaning on it.

Anyway, all I managed was a quick walk, so tomorrow will be a more intense workout day (probably running). Last night's belly dance class was fun and more vigorous than usual, though, and I managed to do my pushups (repeating week 4, level 2 again until I feel like I'm not making myself too sore to move on).

    Better day tomorrow boogaloo. :flowerforyou:

    Good morning.
Another quick post because I am running a little short on time. I have spent the last two days cleaning the house so I haven't officially worked out. Today is suppose to be an off day, but last night we went out for custard, and I may be eating lunch out today. So 45 minutes of taebo it is! Then we have horse therapy, meeting with a friend, and a little more house work to do this afternoon. If the pastor is feeling better we will go to church tonight.
    Need to get busy boogaloo!

Brrr 64 degrees. I'll have to wear long sleeves while biking today - if I can get out before the rain. Kinda getting a late start today. Yoga is also on the schedule.
I can't decide about going to tomorrow's hard yoga class. I don't want to be sore for Saturday's ride, but I want to go to class. hmmm. If I get my butt in gear, I could go to the 9:30am class tomorrow (hard teacher is subbing) - but as I rolled out of bed at 8 this morning, that is questionable.

I have to write a description of my yoga class for the website. Harder than I thought it would be - trying to make it sound different than everyone else. Here it is for your critiquing pleasure (please, my feelings won't be hurt!): An upbeat class that works on proper alignment, strength, and balance, while striving for joy. Inversions, backbends, arm balances, and flow are part of the practice; adjustments are available for desired intensity and strength. The class is empowering and fun. Intermediate.

I'm just glad I don't have to do a yoga bio - since I don't have any formal training.

As MM said, get busy boogaloo!

    lotusfromthemud Posts: 5,335 Member
Mary, I would go to that class. In your teaching, do you offer variations for beginners? I just know that even "intermediate" is intimidating for some, and that might get you a few more folks trying the class. That being said, there's a place in the world for intermediate classes, too.

Today is the day of my special lady time that keeps me at home. I was on meds for this business, but it just lessened yet prolonged the time, so I'm not taking them. So, hot tea heating pad and rest boogaloo. Maybe a shopping walk (to the butcher, the produce store and the drugstore: about a mile round trip) but not much else. My brain is sort of mush from stress right now, which is bad. My big goals of the day are shopping, reading/tutorial prep (where the brain mush is a big problem) and rest. I've scheduled a session with my trainer (it's been since late July when I last saw here) so I want to be up for it tomorrow.

I'm watching biggest loser, and they said last night that the ladies eat 1200 and burn 6,000. I know that's for extreme reality television for morbidly obese people, but that was shocking. I just hope that normal folks don't take that as a plan for themselves. Yikes.:noway: I did enjoy that they said effectively "this is crazy hard!" but I wish they would have a sit down with the viewers along the lines of "don't try this at home!" (without round-the-clock medical supervision.) My love/hate relationship with that show continues.

    Uh-oh. Soapbox boogaloo.

    Take care.:flowerforyou:

    So, I just had a mini-breakthrough.

I was on the sofa, really, really feeling sorry for myself. I bought these praline pecans (mmm.. ..sugar) earlier today under the ludicrous assumption I could portion them out into salads. Nope. Ate the whole bag, to the tune of over six hundred calories (putting me 200 over for the day). Then, since I had a miserable morning (I was on hold with the financial aid department at the U for 45 minutes, then got cut off and had to call back and hold for another 30 only to find out that my loan applications haven't gone through yet because of their error that I then needed to call the loan company and correct to get my money straightened around) I decided I deserved to mope and eat ice cream.

Instead, I dusted off my old BL cardio max DVD and burned off said 200 calories, and now feel powerful rather than mopey.

    Tah-dah!

Oh, and PS, Mary. . .I always like when teachers say what style they use predominantly (ie: Hatha or Iyengar or whatnot) so I think that might be something to add, if you feel it's appropriate.

Good for you, V! I had something similar today. Remember how I didn't work out yesterday because I had such a bad day, blah blah blah? Well, today completely blew yesterday out of the water - it was just awful. They were having a bake sale at work... but when my co-worker offered to get me something (because I was chained to my desk fixing a problem), I said, "no, I'm trying to stop stress-eating." I think just saying it out loud helped me feel a little more accountable, and so I stuck to it. By the time I finally got done at work, though, I was feel so sorry for myself that I was totally ready to go out for Mexican (and margaritas). I even told another co-worker that I had intended to get a good workout in today but didn't think I was up to it. (And he was the one who suggested the Mexican food, actually.) But... on the way home, I thought about how I was going to feel if I took another day off - especially since we are going out tomorrow (Cirque du Soleil!). It was getting late, and I really *didn't* have the strength to go running. I went home, changed into my workout clothes, and... put in nearly an hour playing DDR in workout mode. I didn't wear my HRM, but I am pretty sure that I burned at least 400-500 calories. And now? I feel GREAT. I eventually fixed the problem at work, even though it totally sucked, and then I managed to do something constructive (and yes, a little fun) for myself, rather than self-destructive. I let myself have a second glass of wine after dinner, not because I felt sorry for myself, but because I enjoyed it and I knew it wasn't bad because I already did the work.

    Ta-da, indeed! :flowerforyou:

Mary, I think it's a great description. I don't know enough about yoga to be terribly helpful (it sounds intimidating to me), but here are my thoughts from a writing standpoint: the first sentence is great; the next couple are just a tiny bit weaker because of the passive voice. (Maybe change the semicolon to a "with" and drop the second "are"?) I like that you included specifics on some of the elements you plan to include. Sounds interesting!

(Hey, V, still need an editor? Maybe MM and I should start a little side gig here... I used to think I would be a good editor - I always feel like I'm better at critiquing my writing than I am at actually getting it down.)

    Cirque boogaloo!

    Good morning!
Sorry I haven't had any time to comment on your posts. I haven't had much time to be on here lately. I have really only had time to post my goals for the day and then run off somewhere.
I am going shopping today and I am pretty sure that's going to take a couple of hours. I hope I can fit all we need into the budget. There's some things I could do with out for awhile but I'm getting tired of neglecting myself to make room for other things on the list. I may have to cut some things out just to make the budget, but it will then go on to next week's list. Don't know why I am telling you all this.
    So here are my goals:
    shopping
    more cleaning
    work/play with Alex
    a little down time
I may see if DH wants to take a walk tonight for some extra exercise. He needs it too. He's not getting fat. It would just be good for him.
I have to runaway now. Have a great day Pebbles! :smooched:

Today I'm going for a barter session with my trainer. I've been promised boxing, so I'm pretty excited.

Also, have to work on my appendix section (not on my body, on my paper) and then get a manicure before choir practice. That doesn't sound like too bad of a day, actually. (I'm trying to balance positive things with work lately)

The most crucial time for any project for me, I realize is when it's almost finished. I tend to abandon things. I've been pondering if that's why I can't drop the last teeny little bit of fat. Self psychoanalysis is fun! (not really.)

    Sticking to it boogaloo.:flowerforyou:

Thanks for the input. I didn't put Iyengar/Anusara on the description because I'm not officially trained - and it's all Hatha yoga, btw. I put in your suggestions CP. I thought passive voice was "has been" - is and are are passive? Never really understood it, but I had a professor once who went ape crazy when you used it. I had a student in yoga that taught me lay/lie thing (chicken's lay eggs, humans lie down) - I was really happy about that - if you could teach me passive voice, it would help.

Today - bike and yoga - surprised? I don't know if it will be yoga at home or hard yoga at the gym. I hope the rain clears up for me to ride to the store.

I love Cirque - have fun! Which one are you going to? I love the contortionist, but I'm sure you guessed that one. When I have to use music in yoga, I use Cirque.

    Grammar, boogaloo?

ps - I always thought it would be funny to play a practical joke on a yoga teacher and have a contortionist come to class - or better yet, lots of them.

OK, both of those made me laugh out loud.

Oops, my trainer just canceled. So, plan B will involve some elliptical. Also, just got my new stuff in the mail, so I'll probably work out with the new DVD tomorrow.

It's all hatha? I guess that makes sense. . ."a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" (on my part) (one of my favourite quotes of all time). I feel silly.

My current grammar beast to slay is shifting tenses. I write pretty stream of consciousness drafts and end up starting a paragraph in past tense and then sprinkling it with other tenses. Oops. Have I mentioned I'm not a detail oriented person?

****WARNING: GRAMMAR POST!**** Feel free to skip.
I thought passive voice was "has been" - is and are are passive?
Er, well... I probably wasn't very precise there. :embarassed: I'm not fabulous at knowing all the names for all the grammatical rules (I couldn't tell you anything about participles, and I always forget which is a phrase and which is a clause, etc. But I think I usually can get the actual constructs right, even if I don't know the names for them).

Anyway, you're right - what you wrote wasn't exactly passive voice. Is and are are not necessarily passive, though they are 'weaker', so I sometimes try to reword things so that there aren't too many consecutive uses. Passive voice is basically a way of phrasing things that takes regular verbs and combines them with helper verbs (like 'is' or 'has'). "I sat next to Mary" is active; "I was seated next to Mary" is passive. People tend to overuse passive voice because it feels more formal (think lawyer-speak), and it is less committal about the subject or intent. In the 'sat' example, using passive voice makes it seem accidental - I just happened to be next to Mary, or maybe someone else seated me there - whereas the active voice takes ownership of the action. 'You' physically did the sitting, in either case - but the implication differs. Passive voice can also be combined with so-called "weasel words" like "clearly" to make vague assertions like, "It is well-known that..." instead of, "Studies by so-and-so proved that..." or "I believe that..."

Hmm, that probably didn't tell you anything you didn't already know. :ohwell: I like the rule for lay vs. lie - so you would lay a book on the table, but your cat lies on the book. I still have problems with farther vs. further, or toward vs. towards. V, I had a lot of problems with shifting tenses when I was doing the final write-up for my project... I think I ended up switching almost all of them to present tense unless I was describing actual work that I did.

Disclaimer: I have no real credentials for this stuff, other than the fact that I usually found I was a lot harsher judge of my writing than most of my profs. I may very well be mistaken on particulars (and please let me know if I am!).
Additional disclaimer: my emails and forum posts do not adhere to any real standards - they are pretty much just the way I talk (or talk in my head). Hence, my overuse of the dash and ellipsis, and my tendency to start every other sentence with 'and' or 'but'. (That last sentence wasn't even a sentence!)

As far as I know further/farther and toward/towards are the same word.

I do the edits for my husband's work. I read "jargon, jargon, jargon, missed comma, jargon, jargon..." My favorite error find so far was in a short story he wrote. He mentioned that the building was 3 stories and then said someone went to the 5th floor.

CP - you didn't do your fitness post...

I have a grammar story to tell too, but I can't tell it right now. I wrote a book about 5 years ago, and DH was going through it with me to edit it and we found a hilarious mistake. I don't want to botch it so I will have to find it in the book and share it with you all. I'm rereading the book now (is that vain?) to see if it really was any good. It needs a LOT of work. Not just grammar and punctuation either. Maybe one day I will finish it.
I am doing well with my eating so far today, except that I am hungry! right now. Dinner won't be for another hour or so, so I am going to go eat some carrots to hold me over. I could wait but I'll eat too much and feel really bad for blowing my good day on dinner.

 MM. But I'm impressed with anybody who writes a book - the 50 pages of my master's write-up nearly killed me!

Mary, you're right! I wrote a fitness post up at work, but apparently I forgot to post it again. :blushing: The rambling grammar post must have distracted me. Anyway, today was pretty much a planned day off because of the show (which was fantastic, of course). You would have loved the contortionists - wow. I did get a walk in - the weather was finally nice again.

Tomorrow I'm going out for lunch (after going out tonight for dinner), so I'll definitely be wanting to get in a good workout. And pushups. I'm doing week 4 on level 2 again... and it doesn't seem to be easier yet. I'll keep doing them anyway.

    Howdy!
I stepped on the horrible scale this morning, not expecting anything different, but still hoping. I'm down a pound! Not sure if it will stick around but for the first time in over a month it's moving in the right direction.
I woke up hungry in the night, but managed to go back to sleep. Most of the time I can't. What do you ladies do if you wake up hungry in the night?
Today I am going to a brunch (may have said that already), cleaning, and doing push ups. I don't know if I will have time to work out. Alex's therapist is coming over tonight too. Doesn't leave a lot of time, but I probably need to since I have no idea what they are serving at the brunch.
