Toddler and Tiaras

The pageants on Toddlers and Tiaras--no. Those are horrific.
BUT some pageants I'm totally cool with. For example, my friend Amber competed in pageants from about age 9 or 10 until last year when she was crowned Miss New York USA 2011 and ranked in the top 10 in the Miss USA pageant. She never did any of those creepy dance routines, or weird glitz pageants, hers were actually scholarship programs and based on poise, and interviews, etc. She has a Master's from NYU and while in grad school was a pre-school teacher for special needs children. The girl is EXTREMELY smart and accomplished, and gained a lot of her confidence (and paid for college) via pageants. She grew up in a trailer park and worked at Sonic when we were in high school to pay for pageant gowns, and the gown she won the Miss New York USA pageant in was a second hand dress she got at a consignment shop--she did it all for herself, not because her parents made her. She worked hard.
So I'm not totally against the world of pageants, because I do think they can open doors for young women BUT it depends on the particular pageant circuit. Those creepy glitz pageants with overly sexualized children doing trashy dance routines are sickening to me! I will admit though...sometimes I get really sucked into that show and can't stop watching...like a horrible train wreck.
This. The end.0 -
CPS should be called on each and every one of the families with girls on that show. My heart breaks for those little girls. I am totally against any beauty pageant for little girls. For those who don't win, it's like saying, "It's because you weren't pretty enough, talented enough, or had the best personality". Pathetic.0

People just take it too far... there are local community pageants that clearly state " not glitz" and all outfits have to be pre-approved and participants are informed judges will deduct for anything "fake". My 7 year old saw a parade and of course wants to be a princess too. All the girls get a trophy. There is NO swimsuit category... so those crazy moms need to just chill out and let the little girls have FUN!0
-
Why are non-glitz and non-glam pageants any different, really? The objective is to win on your looks.0

There's always going to be pageants, cheerleaders, dance competitions... personally- that stuff never interested me. But if a kids wants to try something new (safe) and is being taught a healthy attitude by responsible parents, I don't mind. Any team sport, school plays... tons of social activies unfortunately will always result in winners and... disappointment. Its up to us to support and guide our children in their endeavours. That's my opinion only.0

I don't like the glitzed out pageants. There is no reason you should be putting fake hair, nails, teeth, tan, etc on a child. The other pageants don't bother me but for some reason seeing a 5 year old in heavier make up than me and more weave than a hair shop bothers me.0

Athletic competitions, academic comepetitions, try-outs for sports or plays are sooooo different than a beauty pageant. IMHO0 -
I never met many stripper's that were former pageant girls.....LOL0

I have only seen the show once....and that was enough. I was struck at the behavior of the kids. It is all about them and they know it. They do, say and act however they want because they know they will get what they want. Shame on the parents!0
-
No offence but if you think cheerleading isn't a popularity contest ... okay. If she doesn't have fun, she probably won't want to do it again. If she does then ill AGAIN make sure its NOT that crazy crap on tv but normal small town princess stuff. She's not wrong to want to ride the float- lol. That's all it is. Her room is pink. She likes to play dress up. She's a normal little girl. I'm sooooo not gonna make a big deal out of it.
There's a difference between "popularity contests" and being judged on your beauty. Football is HUGE here in Texas, and I'm amazed at the talent and athletic ability of many of the cheerleaders. They're not just voted on by how popular they are anymore; these girls are athletes!0 -
if your kid wants to do it sure......however the crazy parents on the show that are living vicarously thru their kids.....need a good sound beating......also anyone there with out their kid in it(or helping a friends kid neice nefew) should be soundly beat as well as well

I let me daughter participate in what is called non-glam pageants. Meaning there is no makeup, no fake nails, teethe, or anything else... Its just the girls in nice dresses/gowns.
I think that if you start a young girl wearing make up and all of that other stuff, it is sending the wrong message...
You are basically telling them to win, you have to hide who you are, so in reality you are not good enough. You have to be this false, fake looking girl to be noticed... If yo0u go down that road, it is very hard to come back... I think all children are beautiful in their own way, and should not need make up, wigs, nails, fake teethe, or super skimpy swim suits in order to feel loved. A good case in point.
A lady i know here in TN bought her daughter a swim suit, her daughter is 6 years old, mine is 5 years old. She messages me on face book and says, I have a great pageant swim suit if you want it, I bought it for my girl but it doesn't fit. I said I would look at it..(I am very strict on my girls swim suits) So I look at it, and it is a 4t, He daughter wears a 6/7 in clothes... I said I guess it doesn't fit, this is too small for my girl too... She said, no it isn't too small, it wasn't tight enough... And it didn't hug her in the right places.
Another thing,
When you put young girls in skimpy outfits, that are skin tight, you are giving them the ok for sexuality. not only that, you are providing lots of eye candy for the perverts out there...
If you can not tell by my post, I am against the the full glitz/glam pageants, but I will support my daughter in non-glam pageants, as long as it is what she wants to do, but she knows that she is still number one in my life regardless.
THIS!!!!!
I have a 6 yr old daughter and totally agree. No bikinis at the pool. No 'grown' looking clothes either. I want her to be a little girl as long as possible. She is pretty well-rounded... likes to dance, likes to play soccer, likes to wear a dress and likes to get dirty. Kids grow up too fast these days.0 -
I've seen the show once, and I was very disgusted at the parents, the judges, and the producers of the show for allowing this to even air. It baffles me how parents can be so "abusive" to their kids just so the parent can enjoy the prize money or the attention. These kids look extremely creepy with their fake hair, nails, teeth, caked on make-up, and stripper clothes. The kids are being forced to do things they don't want to do just to make their mom happy. Where are the fathers??? Why aren't father's putting their foot down on this. My husband would never let our 4 yr old daughter look like that. Shoot, we have her taking taekwondo. What these parents are doing, is raising fake, spoiled brats. Their parents will get what's coming to them when the kid gets older, more demanding, bratty, spoiled, and disrespectful.
karma's a b*tch0 -
It's child abuse.
I don't know how it ever got ok to parade a 5 year old around dressed like a 5 dollar ho.0 -

Yes, I actually know plenty of them...... I don't recall any of them mentioning being placed in pageants. Most were tomboy's growing up a few cheerleaders her and there. Girl's from broken home's, etc. etc... I am sure out of the 100's that I have met there might have been 1 or 2 so called pageant girls.. Most of the girls that I have met that were in pageant's similar to these ended up sorority girls, married to their high school sweetheart's and wanna be socialite's... pretty "normal" acceptable American lifestyle..... I always say never hate on a stripper unless you have known one... They aren't all stereotypical you know....
I do think the little girls are being pushed into doing these types of things because the mother had no life and/or looks...0 -
Wrong on so many levels...and for those who say "if the child wants it", it's not as naive as that. These parents spend thousands of dollars (on dresses, make-up, tanning sessions, etc.) and incredible amounts of time and energy on these little girls. It is, ultimately, about fulfilling the parents' needs and doing a huge disservice to their daughters.0
-
Hate them! I'm sure all of the parents aren't horrible, however my sister put all three of her girls in pageants and she was/is a horrible parent. The pageants were always her top priority, she has never kept a steady job and was on financial aid, food stamps & section 8 housing the entire time she was putting her girls in pageants. I've seen what it has done to the children (all are now adults one became a stripper) It's just disgusting, what some parents have their kids do and think it's ok. I do not speak to my sister, nor does my family for this & a few other reasons.0

Exactly, a lot of them support their kids and provide them a great life. Then there are the "bad one's" and ALL of them get a bad rap because of the "bad ones"....
It's always a touchy subject with people... because they hate strippers and also hate people on welfare so which one is right you know? but they are very curious about pole dancing lessons... I always get a kick out of that..... LMAO0 -
Those shows break my heart. Those little girls are are being taught by their MOTHERS to wiggle their butts and shake their not yet developed chests for a trophy and some prize money. The sexualization of children in our culture is horrifying. Who was it? Abercrombie that had stuffed bikini tops for 7 year olds? WHY???? I've read so many gut-wrenching articles about the child-porn rings that they've been busting lately... there are already so many dysfunctional people that look at a normal child (infants even) as sexual beings, why do we want to tempt the not-quite-as-dysfunctional-but-on-the-edge ones by actually portraying a child as a sexual being in skin tight clothes & make-up?0
-
I think it is porn for pedophiles....parents should be shot for doing this.0
-
I actually like that show, i mean dont get me wrong some of those parents need help. Growing up my mom put us in pageants cause we wanted too, it is a TV SHOW PEOPLE, they show the crazy over dreaming parents so that ppl who like to judge watch it. There making their ratings and thats all they care about.
There is pros & cons to pageants but tv only shows cons. If you dont like it, dont watch it.0 -

Where you're at, maybe it's all about athletic ability but where I come from - it was all popularity. And the pageants for scholarships are not completely based on looks. To get to Miss USA, for example, you have to get through your state, for which you have to get through other pageants. Anyway, none of the contestants just stand there and look pretty to win. There are interviews, they are judged on poise and maturity, and whether they are good to be a role model for young women. Look at the winners of the bigger pageants. These are not empty headed barbies. They are accomplished young women. There's a lot more to the pageant than just the beauty contest. Yes, looks are part of it, but you will never see a Miss USA with a sleazy reputation, no education and no ambition. To put the entire pageant industry into a pigeon hole is the same saying all athletes are dumb jocks.
T&T is trash tv, just like all the other reality shows. Its like the news after a tornado in the south. They don't interview the physician or lawyer who just lost their house. They go straight to the trailer park, and hunt down the most toothless, deeply accented, 'people of walmart' person that they can find because it makes people watch.
Then again, I think all those shows are trash. T&T, Dance Moms, The Bachelor, Glass House, Real Housewives & Kardashians. So I guess I'm guilty of pigeon-holing reality tv. LOL :laugh:0 -
Disgrace. Horrible horrible idea to subject your children to pageants the way they do!0
