Knee problems?! Just when I got into a routine!!

I am extremely frustrated. I just finished a personal challenge in which I decided to run three days a week for three weeks straight so I could get into a good routine and not give up. Well I completed my challenge, in fact I added a few days of a dance workout video the last week also! But the day after I completed my challenge I was walking up the stairs and my right knee got this shooting burning pain on either side of my kneecap whenever I tried to put weight on my knee while it was bent. So I haven't run in 4 days now because I don't want to injure myself any further, but it's not getting any better. In fact this morning I went to Walgreens and picked up a good knee brace with the metal hinges on the side, I put it on and it made my knee hurt even more!! I don't know what to do. I was in such an awesome groove with exercising and I felt amazing. My body feels like crap this week because I haven' t exercised. I'm thinking I need to get a weight bench and do some lifting to strengthen my legs before I run anymore...but I don't want to give up my running.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated, I'm not looking for a diagnosis here, but if you have had similar experiences I'd love to hear about them!!

If it is not getting any better with the rest, I think you need to see a doctor.

Well..... I would go to the doctor to get it checked out before changing/adding anything to your exercise routine. You may need to treat it with rest, ibuprofen, cold/hot compresses and let it heal. My left knee acts up on occasion, so I try to take it easy in cardio kickbox, and it usually takes care of itself.

It's probably Chondromalacia Patella (runners knee). I had the same thing happen to me when I was trying to switch from walking to jogging. I did too much to fast. I did go to the doctor and it's pretty common. I had to take ibuprofen and only do low impact exercise for 6-8 weeks. Read up on it and see if you might have it and then go talk to doctor.

It definitely looks like I have runner's knee! I think I will take up bike riding and lifting to strengthen my quads and go back to running less.

There is a little brace that helps with the pain, it sits right under the knee cap and helps support the knee cap when walking, really helps the pain on those days it's bad. You can even make one yourself with just a cloth and some panty hose :) lol
