Also.. i am wanting to get the best shoes for the run I can.. i know with a good pair of shoes knees and ankles and the whole body work better together.. anyone have any hints on the good ones??

thanks so much for all your help and advice i am so excited and nervous and I cant wait to cross that finish line!!! I will be one of those that cry when they do!!!

    Congrats!

The "best" shoes are ones that fit you and your gait. What is my best shoe may or may not be yours. The best way to find what is best for you is to get fitted at a running specialty store. If you are in Canada, the Running Room offers this. They will even let you try the shoes for a couple of weeks indoors and exchange of there are problems. I have done that.

Here is a great post on first time race

Good luck and most importantly have fun.

ETA - I see there is a Running Room in Abbotsford. Even if it is a short trip it might be worth it. My closest is 4 hours away. I hit one up whenever I travel.

I'm trianing for a 4 miler~ and I'm heading back to the local running store here- they look at your gait- what you want to use the shoes for- walking and/or running~ and how your shoes look now- the tennies shoes I'm training in to see how I currently run and wear my shoes.

Good luck~ you can do this and you will rock it!

The link above for first timer's is really helpful. I ran my first 5k last month and I wish that I had not stressed out so much about it. You have plenty of time to train for it and if you stick to running 3 x/week you will be great. I also wish I had worked more on reducing my time but I was so convinced i would struggle to even finish it that i didn't address that :noway:

You will be great, stay positive and HAVE FUN! Enjoy this milestone in your life. :flowerforyou:

Well done on signing up for the run! Have a gait analysis done - the right trainers will make a terrific difference. I had one done free in a sports store here... In preparation, remember rest days are equally as important as training days. Just don't overdo it. I did my first 5-k about a year ago, and finished, happy but soaked through in sweat...

    Good luck!

Yaaay, someone else that is doing the Couch to 5k plan!

I literally just downloaded that onto my iPod and started it last night, great work out! Builds you up gradually without killing you aha.

Keep me posted on how you get on?

For a woman, a good bra is an absolute must!

Just finished my third 5K race. Don't worry about everyone else. Some people will pass you up and you will pass some people. It isn't a competition with anyone but you (if you want it to be). 5K races are full of people who are really serious runners and also full of people who slowly walk the whole thing. Enjoy the experience!

Let us know how it goes!

well done and such a great cause as for the right shoes well like they say its your feet but you are doing the right thing by going to a sports shop and taking it from there.
I do a 5k park run every saturday at 9am and yes you go as fast as you can to get the best time but if you feel out of breath then slow down and walk til you feeling better then go at it again thats what I do so good luck and again well done for a good cause

    Best of luck with it

    I'd say

    1) Stay hydrated, drink throughout the drink

    2) Warm up before you run

    3) Nevermind the speed you are doing, just concentrate on distance

    4) Stretch plenty pre and post

    5) Eat within 20minutes of finishing training

    6) Runners, for me its aiscs everytime

    7) Try and relax your breathing

Congratulations on entering your first race!!

Do break in your new shoes long before the race..nothing worse than new shoes that might hurt you on the big day.

Just look to enjoy the race, go for the distance, dont worry about water during the race, you won't need it, do warm up properly before..AND WHATEVER YOU DO,DON'T LET ANYONE IN FANCY DRESS beat you!!

    have fun!

A good pair of running shoes is a great investment if you are training for a 5k. Running shoes come in a wide variety depending on a number of factors. You should go to a store that specialized in selling running shoes. They will do a gait analysis and help you find just the right shoe you. Having the right shoe makes a huge difference and helps prevent injuries.

Don't let running a 5k stress you out. Just do your best and it will be a great feeling when you cross that finish line. I have run several 5k's and while I typically finished at back of the pack I still feel great when I finish. Now I'm stepping it up and running in a Warrior Dash in Sept.

    Good luck

I just started the c25k yesterday. I felt much better then I thought. I thinking signing up for a 5k run is a great idea. It gives you incentive to keep with the c25k program. I may look for one in my area to join. Good luck!!
