Treadmill?

Hello,

I just started to exercise 6 weeks ago after being inactive for many years. My impetus was a Doctor's appointment where I was told that my 50's would be very tough (I am 46) if I didn't change my habits now. A bit overweight, high cholesterol, high BP and a glucose level that was going the wrong direction. Anyway, I took immediate action - changed my diet and began an exercise program including weights and running. I have lost 12 pounds and my BP is almost normal again.

My question is I am doing the running on a treadmill. Yesterday, I had my best time at 25.56 which I know wouldn't be fast for many of you but I couldn't walk a 5k 6 weeks ago much less run one. I want to run in a race just to prove to myself that I can finish. Is it OK for me to keep working on the treadmill or should I hit the road? I would rather stick to what I am enjoying but I do want to be able to finish the race on a road in less than 28 minutes or so at the most. Any suggestions are welcome.
