What are peoples recommendations for a good solid sneaker for treadmill running?

I read back through the forums and have seen that I should get my gait measured and lots of other things done, but I'm not at that stage yet, what I want to know is what shoes are average people finding comfortable and hardy.

I am partial to Air Nike as a walking sneaker, but mine are worn and while comfy for a trip to the mall, they offer very little shock absorption on the tread mill.

Also for some reason I can wear out the air cushioning in them in about 6 months when they were my main shoe for work.

So what brand and style for neutral foot types do people recommend as shock absorbing, jogging on a treadmill, shoes?

P.S. Men's shoes for me, but I'm sure my wife would like some recommendations too

P.P.S I'm also seeing numbers next to all the shoe names, do they correspond to anything, does a Nike something 4 correspond to an Asic something 5 or are they just branding?

As you read in the older posts, the shoe that is right for me might be completely wrong for you.

Go get fitted. You do love your feet, ankles, knees and hips, don't you?

I love Mizuno's Wave Creation 12....I had a hip / back injury from running last summer and the doctor approved these for the stability.
good luck in your search...I tried many shoes before I fell in love with these :)

Indeed I like to cycle too, but right now a $3000 bike is overkill for a few short rides on the trail. As I'm not a professional runner I'm looking for something a little more generic advice and some peoples opinions on quality, there has to be a reason when I walk into D I C K's (I can't believe it asterisked a sporting goods store) that they have 200 different shoes :)

    To each, his own.

Still, I've see the wrong shoe injure runners doing less than 10 miles per week. And with a shoe, it's not like you'll never be able to use it if you give up running after two weeks. You can still garden in them. Just sayin.
