what made you start "tasting" your food?

I just realized this morning while downing some cherries that I don't pay attention to my food. What I mean is that I just eat. I'm not paying attention to the flavors. Of course while I'm eating it all tastes good but what I mean, I guess, is that I'm not savoring it. For those of you out there who know what I'm talking about, my question is, how did you make yourself slow down while eating and actually pay attention to your food instead of just eating to eat? Now that you are paying attention has that helped in your weight loss?

Sometimes I eat things just because I know they need to be eaten. Those I don't savor. Usually when I am having raw veggies, I just go through the motions. The stuff I really taste is the stuff I cook myself. I had to train my pallet when I learned to cook so I can taste the nuances and flavor profiles very well. That is part of my problem, I go for taste first and content second.

eating less makes me slow down and savour what i'm eating. or really savouring a treat and making it last so it seems like i'm having more of it. i still mindlessly eat everyonce in awhile though. bad habit!!

totally get what you are saying, catch myself doing that a lot. have for years. got really bad when i became a mom and started scarfing down here and there when i could, in between doing stuff for the kids, finishing off their plates, etc. i still do it from time to time, and you are right it's a mental thing. i literally tell myself to SLOW DOWN and enjoy many times.

things that help, cook for yourself. seriously, make your meals from scratch. i have found when i take the time to prepare my food, i'm more conscious of what goes into it and how long it took me to prepare it, and it helps me to savor it. when i take 20 mintues to make something and scarf it down in five, that's not worth it and so i slow down.

that and when i am eating, i remind myself that this is my meal until a certain time, so enjoy it. at lunch, i won't eat again for another ... hours, so enjoy it and savor it. i'm trying not to do so much snacking but instead eating at meal times, so it helps to think this way for me.

another thing, eat good food. eat what is in season, so the flavors are at their height and they are really good. eat fruit and veggies that are flavorful, not cardboard. spend extra money on organic or farmer's markets when you can, so you can actually taste your food. buy cherry tomatoes full of flavor instead of the bigger salad ones that taste like nothing.
