Pressure and Diet

So i'm beginning to have really hard time dealing with ouside pressure from my morther-in-law.
I'll begin with the fact that i'm a recovering anorexic (yes, fat people can suffer from anorexia too). I've tried very hard to set up a HEALTHY weight loss plan this time.
Recently though, my mother-in-law, who recently dropped 20lbs (by taking ex-lax every night and eating nothing but sunflower seeds and sugar-free jello) has been hounding me to take her laxatives. She said "You could really do with a colon cleanse, you'll probably lose about 7 lbs like that!"
This is an everyday thing now. I've asked her not to offer them, told her about my history, told her that fiber from food can do the same thing, but still she does this.
Does anyone have any coping ideas they can send my way? One day soon i'm going to crack and it's all downhill from there. (We live together so it's that much harder.)
I know it's wierd, thanks for indulging me.........

When you start losing the weight naturally she will see that you don't need any unhealthy influences. Show her by your actions, eating healthy and clean and exercise. Keep smiling throughout and absolutely ignore her "advice". I know how certain in laws can be pushy, it's hard, but you are going to have to really tell her how you feel clearly and matter of fact.
Good luck to you and keep us posted

You poor thing! Please remember that her daily exlax use is an extremely harmful disorder, similar to anorexia. She's only concerned with what the scales say. You however are working toward healthy fat loss. Consider yourself a positive example for her.0

Oh my gosh, it sounds as though your mother-in-law has the same problem as you once did.
Peer pressure comes in many forms and the only way to combat it is to be strong and let her know you dont want to harm yourself by following her destructive and risky weight loss method. I would even suggest if possible to limit contact with her for a while until you can get a handle on your own health. You are doing the right thing and I believe you have joined the right group. Look around you, there are tons of people who have lost weight and become stronger through good old fashioned diet and exercise.
Hang in there and feel free to chat with me private if you like.

Do some quick research on the dangers and side effects of said "colon cleanses"... excessive use of laxitives actually causes constipation because the body loses the ability to perform this function on it's own. Find the most disgusting pictures, the most vivid words, print them off and give them to her. That should shut her up pretty quick.0

As somebody who also has food issues, I can completley understand where you are coming from.
The only advice I can offer is to ignore her... maybe even ask your hubby to talk to her about it? She may be more likely to listen to him. Have him explain the seriousness of what she's doing.
The fact that you are on this site, which promotes healthy weight loss is a step in the right direction. Keep your head up... you can do this the right way0 -
People kept trying to tell me what to do. Take the advice and process it in your brain. If you think its good, take it, if not, let it go.
I laughed at everyone, that was my coping. People telling me that I don't eat enough or I eat weird food, it didn't matter.
As far as your mother in law, tell her you want to give your way a try for a while and if that doesn't work (since you KNOW it will), then you will consider her way. Good luck with what ever you do.0 -
Yeah I agree, tell her to back up off of you. You got this:laugh: You don't need her help. There comes a time where you do have to put people in their place.
You are doing what is right and healthy . Remember that.:flowerforyou:0 -
Thanks all. I did mention to my guy that she seems to have an eating disorder but he says if it gets out of hand he'll do something, but to me it's already out of hand.
The info and pictures is a really good idea! She may blow it off but it's whatever.
i'm so glad there are people here that get it. These issues are no joke.
Yep, i'm in the right place. Thanks.
You guys made me feel tons better about this!0 -
Once she starts eating again she is going to gain all the weight back. She is doing a quick fix and they don't last. Keep at it the healthy way. You will feel better knowing your taking care of your body.
Just simply tell her no, your not going to do it that way.0 -
Through my own personal experience, unfortunately......there is nothing you can do about a
"Monster in Law". :explode: I know it's hard but try to ignore her. Whatever you do, don't give in to her or take it out on your hubby. Good luck!0
