Preservatives- to avoid or not to avoid

I am not a cook, I absolutely hate cooking. The most I will do is boil eggs for breakfast but anything more than that is not worth the effort. I have found that it's way easier to pop a Smart Ones (Weight Watchers prodcut- frozen meal) in the microwave. They are tasty, low in calories and very satisfying/filling. However, I have noticed that Lean Cusine meals differentiate themselves by advertising that their products do not contain preservatives.
My questions are: what is so bad about preservatives? Why should I avoid them? If a product doesn't mention that it contains preservatives, then by defualt should I assume that it does?
Thank you.

preservatives are good at stopping things going off too fast. They do what they say.
If you eat and cook fresh foods without preservatives you need to make a little effort to buy things with enough time left and eat them while fresh. Many prefer this approach.0
