Does Stop and Go Riding Burn More Calories?

We are aware that our car's gas mileage goes down in city driving where we stop and start frequently. On this morning's ride, my average was well over 18 until I got into town. Then it dropped to 15 - 16 which puts me in a lower calorie class. It got me thinking, does the stopping and re-accelerating make me burn more calories than what my average would indicate? I'm not going to alter what MFP allows, it will be plenty and the bottom line is the weight is going down.
But I am curious - what do you think? Does Stop and Go Riding Burn More Calories?
